❀ Janazah Prayer May Be Performed Inside the Mosque When Needed
It is permissible to perform the Janazah (funeral) prayer inside the mosque, especially in cases of necessity or need.
➊ Narration from Hazrat Aishah (رضي الله عنها):
She said:
والله لقد صلى رسول الله على ابنى بيضاء فى المسجد
“By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) offered the Janazah prayer for the sons of Bayda’ inside the mosque.”
📚 [Muslim: 973, Kitab al-Jana’iz: Chapter on prayer over the deceased in the mosque; Abu Dawud: 3189; Tirmidhi: 1033; Al-Nasa’i: 4/68; Ibn Majah: 1518; Muwatta: 1/229; Ibn Abi Shaybah: 3/364; Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar: 49231; Al-Bayhaqi: 4/51]
➋ Narration from Hazrat Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما):
صلى على عمر فى المسجد
“The Janazah prayer for Hazrat Umar (رضي الله عنه) was offered inside the mosque.”
📚 [Muwatta: 1/230]
➌ It is also narrated that Hazrat Umar (رضي الله عنه) offered the Janazah prayer for Hazrat Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) inside the mosque.
📚 [‘Abd al-Razzaq: 6576]
❖ Scholarly Positions:
✔ Majority of scholars, including Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله) and Imam al-Shafi‘i (رحمه الله), hold the opinion that Janazah prayer in the mosque is permissible.
✘ Imam Abu Hanifah (رحمه الله) and Imam Malik (رحمه الله) consider it makruh (disliked).
📚 [Nayl al-Awtar: 3/13; Al-Hawi: 3/50; Al-Umm: 1/461; Al-Mabsut: 2/68; Al-Hidayah: 1/92; Tuhfat al-Fuqaha’: 1/395]
Note: There is no authentic evidence proving that such practice is makruh.
❖ Shaykh Al-Albani (رحمه الله)** says:
Offering Janazah prayer in the mosque is permissible, though preferable to pray outside in the designated Janazah area, as was the usual practice during the time of the Prophet (ﷺ).
📚 [Ahkam al-Jana’iz: p. 135]
❖ Imam Bukhari (رحمه الله)** also titled a chapter in Sahih Bukhari as:
الصلاة على الجنائز بالمصلى والمسجد
“Offering the Janazah prayer in the prayer ground and in the mosque (both are valid).”
📚 [Sahih Bukhari, before Hadith: 1327, Kitab al-Jana’iz]
✔ Summary of the Ruling:
❶ Offering Janazah prayer in the mosque is permissible, especially in cases of need.
❷ The Prophet (ﷺ) and the Companions prayed Janazah in the mosque.
❸ There is no sound proof for considering it disliked (makruh).
❹ The preferred method remains praying in an open funeral ground (janazah gah), following the usual Sunnah practice.
