Ruling on Audible Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha in Funeral Prayer
❖ Question:
Some people claim that reciting Surah Al-Fatiha aloud in Salat al-Janazah (funeral prayer) is established, but reciting the supplications and Salawat aloud is not. Kindly provide guidance on this matter.
❖ Answer by: Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir حفظه الله
❖ Preferred Method: Silent Recitation in Janazah Prayer
The most virtuous and preferred method for Salat al-Janazah is to recite silently (sirrī). This is supported by the following narration of Abu Umamah رضي الله عنه:
Proof of Silent Recitation in Janazah Prayer:
Abu Umamah رضي الله عنه said:
❝The Sunnah is to recite Surah Al-Fatiha quietly after the first Takbir in the funeral prayer, followed by three more Takbirs, and then conclude with Salam.❞
📖 [Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 1991]
❖ Permissibility of Audible Recitation for Teaching Purposes
If Salat al-Janazah is performed audibly for educational purposes, there is no harm in this. This is evidenced by the practice of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما.
❖ The Practice of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما
Talḥah ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAwf narrated:
❝We performed the funeral prayer behind Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما, and he recited Surah Al-Fatiha aloud. Then he said: ‘You should know that this is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.’❞
📖 [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 1335]
In another narration, Talḥah ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAwf reported:
❝I performed the funeral prayer behind Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما. He recited Surah Al-Fatiha and another Surah aloud, such that we could hear it. When he finished, I held his hand and asked him about it. He replied: ‘This is Sunnah and the truth.’❞
📖 [Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 1989]
Another narration mentions:
❝ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما led the funeral prayer and recited Surah Al-Fatiha. When asked about it, he said: ‘It is Sunnah.’❞
📖 [Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1027]
❖ Conclusion:
◈ Silent recitation in Salat al-Janazah is preferred and established, as proven by the narration of Abu Umamah رضي الله عنه.
◈ Audible recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha is permissible for educational purposes, as practiced by Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما.
