Zakāt on 14 Tolas of Gold and Method of Payment During Illness
Reference: Ahkam wa Masail, Zakāt Issues, Vol. 1, Page 273
❖ Question:
I have 14 tolas of gold. How much zakāt is due on it? Also, I am suffering from tuberculosis (TB), due to which I cannot pay zakāt. What is the easiest solution in this situation?
❖ Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
◈ If you have 14 tolas of gold, then the zakāt due is 4 māsha, 1 ratti, and 5 surkh (i.e., 4/1/5 māsha in total). This must be given in zakāt.
◈ If due to illness (TB) you are unable to pay zakāt in one go, then:
✔ You may delay payment until your health improves,
✔ Or, you may pay zakāt in installments if paying all at once is not possible.
Zakāt is a farḍ (obligatory) act of worship. It cannot be neglected, but if there is a genuine excuse, delaying the payment is permissible.
Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam biṣ-ṣawāb.
