❖ The Question
Is wuḍū obligatory for the person who bathes the deceased?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Performing ghusl or wuḍū after bathing the deceased is recommended (mustaḥabb), not obligatory (wājib). This is the opinion of the scholars among the Salaf.
❀ Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ رحمه الله (d. 544H) said:
مذهب كافة العلماء أنه لا يجب عليه وضوء منه
“The consensus of the scholars is that wuḍū is not obligatory upon the one who bathes the deceased.”
(Ikmāl al-Muʿlim, 3/389)
❖ Conclusion
Thus, for the one who bathes the deceased, ghusl and wuḍū are mustaḥabb, not wājib.
