❖ The Question
What is the ruling on taking wages for teaching the Qurʾān?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Taking wages for teaching the Qurʾān is permissible, and in fact, it is considered a noble source of livelihood.
❀ Sahl ibn Saʿd رضي الله عنه narrated:
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “I gift myself to you for Allah and His Messenger.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “I have no need of women.” Then a man said: “O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me.” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Give her a garment.” The man said: “I do not have one.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Give her something, even if it is an iron ring.” He again excused himself, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him: “What portion of the Qurʾān do you know?” He replied: “I know such and such sūrahs.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “I marry her to you for the portion of the Qurʾān you know.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 5029; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 1425)
❀ Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ رحمه الله (d. 544H) said:
فيه جواز أخذ الأجرة على تعليم القرآن، وهو منهب كافة العلماء
“This ḥadīth proves the permissibility of taking wages for teaching the Qurʾān, and this is the opinion of all scholars.”
(Ikmāl al-Muʿlim, 4/584; ʿUmdat al-Qārī by al-ʿAynī, 12/144)
❖ Conclusion
It is permissible and valid to take wages for teaching the Qurʾān. The scholars unanimously agree that this is allowed, and it is among the best forms of earning.
