❖ The Question

Is it permissible to perform voluntary (nafl) prayers after the Fajr adhān, before the Sunnah of Fajr?

And how should we reconcile this with the ḥadīth of the Prophet ﷺ:
“When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he has prayed two rakʿahs”
while a person has already prayed the Sunnah of Fajr at home and enters the mosque, but the congregation has not yet started?

❖ The Answer

Alhamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!

① The Ruling on Voluntary Prayers After Fajr

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“لاَ صَلاَۃَ بَعْدَ الْفَجْرِ حَتّٰی تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ“
“There is no prayer after Fajr until the sun rises.”

Thus, after the adhān of Fajr (i.e., after the true dawn appears), no voluntary prayer is permissible until sunrise — whether before the Sunnah of Fajr or after it.

✿ Exceptions to the Prohibition

Based on authentic aḥādīth, the following are excluded from this prohibition:

  1. Fajr’s two Sunnah rakʿahs
  2. Fajr’s obligatory prayer
  3. Qadāʾ prayers (whether obligatory or Sunnah)
  4. Taḥiyyat al-Masjid (two rakʿahs upon entering the mosque)
  5. Two rakʿahs after ṭawāf
  6. A prayer offered with the imām, even if one had already prayed individually

These exceptions are allowed because authentic texts specifically exempt them from the general prohibition.

② Reconciling the Prohibition with

The Prophet ﷺ commanded:

“إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُکُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلاَ یَجْلِسْ حَتَّی یُصَلِّيَ رَکْعَتَیْنِ“
“When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he has prayed two rakʿahs.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)

This instruction places Taḥiyyat al-Masjid among the exceptions.

✿ Practical Application

  • If someone has prayed the Sunnah of Fajr at home, then enters the mosque and the congregation has not yet begun:
    • He may remain standing until the congregation is established, or
    • He may pray two rakʿahs of Taḥiyyat al-Masjid and then sit.
  • If he begins Taḥiyyat al-Masjid and the congregation starts after one rakʿah:
    • He should end the prayer with salām and immediately join the congregation.

❖ Conclusion

After Fajr adhān, no voluntary prayers are allowed until sunrise, except for those specifically exempted by authentic evidences — including Sunnah al-Fajr, Qadāʾ prayers, Taḥiyyat al-Masjid, ṭawāf prayers, and joining the imām’s prayer.
