❖ Question
A scholar from Gujranwala visited our area and said that ghaybānī funeral prayer (ṣalāt al-janāzah al-ghāʾib) is not permissible. Kindly guide us in the light of Qur’ān and Sunnah.
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Performing the funeral prayer in absentia is completely permissible, whether for a martyr or for a non-martyr. There are clear evidences from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ that establish its legitimacy.
❖ Evidences for Ghaybānī Funeral Prayer
① The Prophet ﷺ prayed the funeral of Najāshī (رضي الله عنه):
- When the Prophet ﷺ learned of the death of the King of Abyssinia, Najāshī, he performed the funeral prayer in Madīnah despite the absence of Najāshī’s body.
- This is a clear proof that the Prophet ﷺ himself performed ghaybānī janāzah.
② The Prophet ﷺ prayed for the martyrs of Uḥud after years:
- The Prophet ﷺ prayed the funeral prayer for the martyrs of Uḥud eight years after their burial, even though their bodies were already buried and not present.
- This act also establishes the permissibility of funeral prayer in absentia.

❖ Conclusion
- These two authentic reports clearly establish that ghaybānī funeral prayer is proven from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
- To deny its permissibility contradicts these clear evidences.
- Just as the Prophet ﷺ performed the ghaybānī janāzah for Najāshī and the martyrs of Uḥud, it remains permissible today to perform it for a deceased person who is not present.
