Expenses (Maintenance)
The wife’s food, maintenance, clothing, and residence are obligatory upon the husband. Similarly, living together in harmony and treating each other in the best manner is required by Shariah. Allah Almighty says:
الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَبِمَا أَنفَقُوا مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ
“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given some of them an advantage over others and because they spend from their wealth.”
He also said:
«أَسْكِنُوهُنَّ مِنْ حَيْثُ سَكَنتُم مِّن وُجْدِكُمْ»
“Provide them with accommodation from where you live.”
Furthermore, He said:
«وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»
“And live with them in kindness.”
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said:
“It is your responsibility to provide them with food and clothing according to what is customary.”
