Mention of Abu al-Hasan al-Rawandi in Imam al-Dhahabi’s book “Siyar A’lam al-Nubala”
The mention of Abu al-Hasan al-Rawandi in Imam al-Dhahabi’s book “Siyar A’lam al-Nubala” is a very important and noteworthy topic, which the Imam has presented with great excellence. Al-Rawandi, who was an intelligent philosopher, initially followed rationalism and then took the path of atheism. After detailing the events and ideas of his life, Imam al-Dhahabi drew the conclusion that having knowledge is necessary, but if knowledge is not accompanied by reason and is devoid of faith, then it is accursed in the sight of Allah. Whereas piety, which can be accepted even without intelligence and knowledge, holds a high status in the sight of Allah.
In Islam, the importance of knowledge and reasoning cannot be denied, nor is any obstacle placed in the path of reflection and contemplation. However, faith based on piety and simplicity is valued more than knowledge if it leads a person to the recognition of the Lord. Imam Dhahabi’s (may Allah have mercy on him) statement holds a very important lesson for us that merely having knowledge is not enough; rather, the knowledge that brings a person closer to Allah is the only valid and acceptable one.
The Trial of the Modern Age and the Problems of Preachers
In today’s era, especially for preachers working in Western countries, this issue has become very sensitive and serious. Many preachers are working in Western societies where they face various ideologies and questions. Many of these preachers have not received religious education from any authentic religious scholar, and as a result, they interpret and preach Islam relying on their own intellect and reasoning. These individuals, influenced by media pressure, public opinion, and the effects of non-Muslim societies, end up saying things that differ from the views of the Salaf and are sometimes atheistic.
The Solution to Avoid This Fitnah
Confronting this fitnah is not easy, but the very first and most important thing is to recognize it as a fitnah. When we lose our insight and fall into self-deception, we can take many dangerous paths, such as talking about the unity of religions, denying the obligation of hijab, or giving atheistic opinions on topics like homosexuality.
The only solution is that preachers always associate themselves with authentic scholars and rely on them for their religious guidance. It is essential that they always consult senior scholars in their religious matters so that they remain on the straight path and do not fall into trials.
Prayer and Steadfastness
At this time, we need to pray to Allah to protect us from this trial and keep our hearts steadfast on the right path. We should earnestly beseech Allah to save us and our callers from this trial and not make us a source of fitnah for the people.
