The Shariah Ruling on Reciting Loudly in the Mosque

A person who recites loudly in the mosque deserves reward only when his recitation does not cause inconvenience to any worshipper or others. If his recitation or any other act causes discomfort to the worshippers or those engaged in worship, such a person will face reprimand and displeasure instead of reward.

➊ In the Light of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri رضی اللہ عنہ narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was once in I’tikaf and people started reciting the Quran loudly in the mosque. He صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم removed the curtain and said:

“Each of you is supplicating to Allah; do not cause harm to one another, refrain from reciting the Quran loudly”

Reference: (Sunan Abu Dawood)

From this hadith, it is understood that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade reciting aloud in the mosque when it causes discomfort to other worshippers. This principle is not limited to recitation only, but any act that disturbs those present in the mosque during worship should be avoided.

Summary

➊ Reciting aloud in the mosque, if it causes discomfort to the worshippers or those praying, is not rewarded but rather subject to reprimand.

➋ The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade actions that cause harm or annoyance to others.

➌ During worship in the mosque, everyone should ensure not to disturb others’ worship and maintain peace and tranquility.

➍ Therefore, when reciting aloud in the mosque, it is necessary to ensure that it does not cause discomfort to anyone else.
