◈ What Should Be Fulfilled First: A Loan or a Vow? ◈
If a person is responsible for both a loan and a vow, then the order of fulfillment depends on which obligation came first.
❖ General Rule:
✔ If the loan was taken before the vow, then it must be repaid first.
✔ If the vow was made before the loan, then the vow must be fulfilled first.
This is because each obligation becomes binding on a person in the order it is incurred, and a subsequent obligation cannot be fulfilled until the prior one is discharged.
❖ Exception – Specific (Muʿayyan) Vows:
If the vow involves a specific and designated item, such as someone saying:
“I have vowed for the sake of Allah to give this specific amount in charity,”
or “to donate this specific food,”
Then this designated item must be used to fulfill the vow, regardless of whether the loan came before or after. In such cases, the vow takes precedence because it applies to a clearly defined object and becomes restricted for that purpose.
