Shar‘i Ruling on Combining ‘Asr Prayer with Jumu‘ah Prayer
Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām
Question:
What is the ruling on combining ‘Asr prayer with Jumu‘ah prayer? If a person is residing outside the city, is it permissible for him to combine these two prayers?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!
- Combining ‘Asr prayer with Jumu‘ah prayer is not permissible, because this practice is not established from the Sunnah.
- It is incorrect to make an analogy (qiyās) between Jumu‘ah and Ẓuhr in this matter, because there are significant differences between the two.
- According to Shar‘i principles, every prayer must be performed in its prescribed time, unless there is a Shar‘i proof permitting it to be combined with another prayer.
Ruling for Travellers
- Those staying outside the city for two or three days are considered Shar‘i travellers; for them, combining prayers is permissible.
- However, if they are staying in nearby areas where they are not counted as travellers, then combining prayers is not permissible.
- This allowance refers to combining Ẓuhr with ‘Asr or Maghrib with ‘Ishā’, not to combining Jumu‘ah with ‘Asr.
Another View on the Prohibition of Combining Jumu‘ah and ‘Asr
- Some scholars hold that prohibiting a traveller from combining Jumu‘ah and ‘Asr merely because it is not established by ḥadīth is not a sound position.
- Although there is no explicit ḥadīth proving the combination of Jumu‘ah and ‘Asr, there is also no explicit ḥadīth forbidding it.
- When a general permission for combining prayers is established from the ḥadīth, this can include combining Jumu‘ah and ‘Asr as well.
- Based on this general permission, combining Jumu‘ah and ‘Asr would be permissible unless there is a specific prohibition — and no such prohibition is known.
