Ruling for One Who Catches Only the Final Tashahhud in Jumu‘ah Prayer

Source: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

Question

If a person arrives for Jumu‘ah prayer when the Imam is in the final tashahhud, will it count as Jumu‘ah for him, or must he pray Zuhr instead?

Answer

Alhamdulillah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

  • If someone reaches the mosque on Friday and joins the Imam only in the final tashahhud, his Jumu‘ah prayer is missed.
  • He should join the Imam in tashahhud, and after the Imam says salam, he must pray four rak‘ahs of Zuhr.

Evidence

1️⃣ Hadith: One Rak‘ah Counts as Having Caught the Prayer

“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the prayer has caught the prayer.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 580; Sahih Muslim 607)

Meaning:

  • If a person has not caught at least one rak‘ah with the Imam, he has not caught that prayer.

2️⃣ Hadith about Jumu‘ah Specifically

“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah has caught (the Jumu‘ah).”
(Sunan an-Nasa’i 1426)

Meaning:

  • If you pray one full rak‘ah with the Imam, then complete the second rak‘ah yourself, your Jumu‘ah is valid.
  • But if you only caught the tashahhud without any rak‘ah, Jumu‘ah is missed and Zuhr becomes obligatory.
