❖ Question:
What is the ruling on adding the phrase Hayya ‘ala Khayr al-‘Amal after Hayya ‘ala al-Falah in the Adhan?
❖ Answer:
The phrase “حَيَّ عَلَى خَيْرِ الْعَمَلِ“ was occasionally said by some Companions, but it was never part of the original Adhan prescribed by the Prophet ﷺ, nor was it adopted as a standard practice or slogan during the time of the Prophet ﷺ or the righteous predecessors (salaf).
✅ Occasional Practice by Some Companions:
❀ It is reported that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنهما) would occasionally say:
“Hayya ‘ala Khayr al-‘Amal” after “Hayya ‘ala al-Falah”.
📘 (Al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi, 1/424) — 🔹 Authentic chain
🔹 However, he did not consider it a permanent part of the Adhan, nor did he establish it as a symbolic slogan (shi‘ār).
✅ Reported from a Tabi‘i:
❀ Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin ‘Ali ibn Husayn (رحمه الله) used to say:
“When he said Hayya ‘ala al-Falah, he would follow it with Hayya ‘ala Khayr al-‘Amal,”
and he would explain:
“This is the first (original) Adhan.”
📘 (Al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi, 1/425) — 🔹 Authentic chain
❖ Scholarly Evaluation:
❀ Imam al-Bayhaqi (رحمه الله) commented:
“This phrase is not authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ in the Adhan he taught to Bilal and Abu Mahdhurah (رضي الله عنهما).
We consider adding anything to the Adhan to be disliked (makruh).”
📘 (Al-Sunan al-Kubra, 1/425)
❀ Hafiz al-Dhahabi (رحمه الله) said:
“This phrase has now become a distinct slogan and sectarian symbol of the Imamiyyah (Shia).”
📘 (Al-Muhadhdhab fi Ikhtisar al-Sunan al-Kubra, 1/419)
❖ Conclusion:
✔ The phrase “Hayya ‘ala Khayr al-‘Amal” is not part of the prescribed Adhan taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
✔ While some individuals like Ibn ‘Umar and Zayn al-‘Abidin used it occasionally as a form of personal devotion, they did not institutionalize it.
✔ Making it a regular feature or identity marker in the Adhan is not supported by the practice of the Prophet ﷺ or the early generations.
✔ Today, this addition is commonly associated with sectarian groups such as the Rafidah/Shi‘ah, and thus its use as a symbol or slogan is rejected.
✔ Key Point:
📢 Adding “Hayya ‘ala Khayr al-‘Amal” in the Adhan is not from the Sunnah, and its usage as a ritual slogan is an innovation. The Prophet ﷺ never taught it as part of the Adhan.
