Ruling on Relations and Attending Marriages of Qādiyānīs (Ahmadīs)
Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol.1, p.129
The Question
Although we call ourselves Muslims, sometimes marital ties are established with Qādiyānīs (Ahmadīs — both Qādiyānī and Lahori groups). For instance, one marriage was conducted in Rabwah, and another in Masjid Nūr Park, Lahore. Now the groom’s wedding is to be held in a Qādiyānī household. Is it permissible to accompany the wedding procession and partake of food there?
The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Both groups of the Qādiyānīs (Qādiyānī and Lahori) are disbelievers. Their disbelief has been unanimously affirmed by scholars long before the partition of India.
- Shaykh al-Islām Abū al-Wafā’ Thānā’ullāh Amritsarī رحمه الله compiled Risālah Fasḵ Nikāḥ Mirzā’iyyān, which was signed by ʿUlamā’ of all schools (Ahl al-Ḥadīth, Ḥanafī, Deobandī, Barelwī, etc.), proving with clear evidences that:
◈ A Muslim woman’s marriage to a Qādiyānī man is invalid.
◈ A Muslim man’s marriage to a Qādiyānī woman is invalid.
◈ If a Muslim becomes Qādiyānī while his wife remains Muslim, their marriage is automatically annulled.
Legal and Sharʿī Status
- Courts in Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi, both before and after partition, declared Qādiyānīs as disbelievers.
- In 1974, the Parliament of Pakistan also declared both sects of Qādiyānīs as non-Muslims.
- The entire Muslim Ummah recognizes them as disbelievers.
Thus, establishing their disbelief is beyond dispute. Both groups are legally and Islamically kāfir and murtadd (apostates).
Qur’ānic Evidences Against Marrying Them
﴿وَلا تُمسِكوا بِعِصَمِ الكَوافِرِ﴾ (Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah: 10)
“Do not hold on to the marriage ties of disbelieving women.”
﴿وَلا تُنكِحُوا المُشرِكينَ حَتّىٰ يُؤمِنوا﴾ (Sūrat al-Baqarah: 221)
“Do not marry [your women] to the polytheists until they believe.”
These verses clearly establish that marriages with Qādiyānīs are absolutely invalid and forbidden. Whoever establishes such ties commits disbelief by rejecting the Qur’ān’s explicit commands.
Attending Their Marriages
Participating in a Qādiyānī wedding procession, eating their food, or celebrating with them is ḥarām, as it amounts to supporting their falsehood.
﴿…وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِنكُم فَإِنَّهُ مِنهُم﴾ (Sūrat al-Mā’idah: 51)
“Whoever befriends them among you is indeed one of them.”
Imām al-Shawkānī رحمه الله explained:
“Allah forbade believers from befriending disbelievers, for befriending them is itself an act of disbelief.”
(Fatḥ al-Bārī 2/49)
Further Qur’ānic Warnings
- Sūrat al-Tawbah: 23 — Do not befriend even your fathers or brothers if they prefer disbelief over faith.
- Sūrat al-Tawbah: 95–96 — They are filth, their abode is Hell, and Allah will never be pleased with such fāsiqīn.
Scholarly Statements
- Imām Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله cites ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها: “When you see people following the mutashābihāt (ambiguous verses), avoid them.”
- Imām al-Qurṭubī and Imām al-Shawkānī رحمهما الله both emphasize that it is forbidden to associate with such misguided groups.
Final Ruling
✿ Marital ties with Qādiyānīs are invalid and ḥarām.
✿ Social relations and friendships with them are forbidden.
✿ Attending their weddings or eating their food is unlawful.
✿ Praying behind them or showing solidarity with them is impermissible.
In short: It is obligatory upon Muslims to completely avoid relations and social participation with Qādiyānīs.
