Question

Respected and honorable Maulana Sahib,

Kindly provide answers to the following questions in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.

The questions are:

➊ Nowadays, people who call themselves practitioners (Aamil), who claim to know the unseen through jinn, give amulets, and engage in such practices—how permissible are these in religion?
➋ For how long should a believer hold resentment against a minor or major grievance?
➌ If a person finishes all his matters and goes to someone’s house saying, “I have come to you, I need your kindness,” then what attitude should be adopted towards them?

Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

(1) The ruling on practitioners and knowing the unseen through jinn

It should be clear that all these people are merely forgers, deceivers, and liars. Because knowledge of the unseen is neither with any prophet sent by Allah, nor with any close angel, nor with any jinn. When no human or jinn except Allah Almighty has knowledge of the unseen, then all the things told through jinn are nothing but lies and slander.

Allah Almighty says:

Reference: [An-Naml: 65

“Say, none in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah, nor do they know when they will be resurrected.”

From this verse, it becomes absolutely clear that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not have knowledge of the unseen. So, when the Chief Messenger did not have knowledge of the unseen, then in what category do these pirs, martyrs, madmen, seekers, worshippers, soothsayers, astrologers, and so-called practitioners of jinn fall?

Even the jinn themselves admitted that they do not have knowledge of the unseen. When Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) passed away and remained standing for a long time leaning on his staff, the jinn did not realize that he had died. Later, when termites ate away the staff and Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) fell to the ground, only then did the jinn realize that he had passed away. This is mentioned in the Quran:

﴿فَلَمّا قَضَينا عَلَيهِ المَوتَ ما دَلَّهُم عَلىٰ مَوتِهِ إِلّا دابَّةُ الأَر‌ضِ تَأكُلُ مِنسَأَتَهُ ۖ فَلَمّا خَرَّ‌ تَبَيَّنَتِ الجِنُّ أَن لَو كانوا يَعلَمونَ الغَيبَ ما لَبِثوا فِى العَذابِ المُهينِ ﴿١٤﴾

Reference: [Saba: 14

“Then when We decreed death for him, none of the jinn knew of his death except a little worm of the earth which kept away his staff. So when he fell down, it became clear to the jinn that if they had knowledge of the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliation.”

These verses clearly show that neither the prophets, nor the angels, nor the jinn have any knowledge of the unseen. Therefore, astrologers, fortune-tellers, soothsayers, sorcerers, and so-called practitioners have no status. They are all liars and fraudsters. Going to them is equivalent to destroying one’s faith.

As far as amulets containing Quranic verses and Hadith are concerned, it is not preferable to hang them. As Nawab Siddiq al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote, it is not proven that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wrote amulets. However, reciting verses and Hadith for ruqyah (spiritual healing) and blowing on someone is completely permissible. But un-Islamic amulets and talismans are impermissible and impure acts.

Because in a Hadith it is stated:

“Whoever confirms a soothsayer has committed disbelief against the Shariah. Indeed, he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ.”

(2) How long is it permissible to remain angry with a believer?

At most, three days. It is not permissible in Shariah to remain angry or cut ties with any Muslim for more than this.

In Sunan Abi Dawood it is stated:

Reference: (Abi Dawood)

’’Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It is not permissible for a Muslim to cut off relations with another Muslim for more than three days. So when they meet, he should say Salam three times; if the other does not respond, then the sin is not on the one who boycotts but on the one who does not respond.’’

However, if the matter is due to a religious cause or involves an aspect of oppression, the ruling will be different.

(3) The ruling on accepting the offer of reconciliation

A person who comes with the intention of reconciliation and asks for forgiveness or seeks love and affection should be welcomed. Their encouragement and arrival should be valued. Otherwise, that person will be severely sinful.

As mentioned in the hadith stated above, the one who refuses reconciliation will be responsible for the sin.
