❀ Question:
According to the prayer timetable compiled by Ḥāfiẓ Muhammad Gondalvi رحمه الله, the time for Fajr (Ṣubḥ Ṣādiq) begins at 4:30 a.m. If someone regularly gives the Adhan at 4:25 a.m.—five minutes before the prescribed time—is there any harm in this, or is it a sin?
❀ Answer:
**✦ The Adhan—whether for Fajr or any other prayer—**must not be given before its actual prescribed time.
Doing so is invalid and impermissible, as it conflicts with the clear instruction of the Qur’an and the defined boundaries of prayer times.
✿ Special Emphasis on Fajr and Maghrib:
Particular strictness is required for Fajr and Maghrib, because:
- People begin their fasts at Fajr,
- And they break their fasts at Maghrib.
Allah ﷻ says:
(Surah al-Baqarah: 187)
“And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night.”
This verse clearly outlines the importance of precise timing for acts of worship linked to the Adhan.
✦ Conclusion:
Giving the Fajr Adhan five minutes early every day is not just a minor mistake but a serious error that can:
- Invalidate fasting actions, and
- Confuse prayer observance.
It is a sinful practice, and the Mu’adhdhin must strictly adhere to the correct time based on accurate timetables like that of Ḥāfiẓ Gondalvi رحمه الله.
✔ Summary:
① No Adhan—Fajr or otherwise—should be given before its actual time.
② Fajr and Maghrib require greater care, due to their link with fasting.
③ Giving the Adhan before time is a sin, not a minor oversight.
