❀ Question:

The Mu’adhdhin is now very elderly and finds it difficult to stand while giving the Adhan. Is it permissible for him to give the Adhan and Iqamah while sitting, especially in front of a loudspeaker?

❀ Answer:

✦ Yes, it is permissible for him to give the Adhan and Iqamah while sitting.
Standing during Adhan and Iqamah is recommended (mustahabb), but it is not an obligation (fard). Therefore, if the Mu’adhdhin is unable to stand due to weakness or old age, he is excused and may perform both while seated.

✿ Reasoning:

  • The act of standing in Adhan and Iqamah is not more critical than standing in the obligatory prayer.
  • Islam provides ease in worship for those who are elderly, weak, or ill.
  • The primary objective of Adhan—announcing the prayer time—is still fulfilled even if done sitting.

✔ Summary:

① It is permissible for a weak or elderly Mu’adhdhin to give Adhan and Iqamah while sitting.
② Standing is recommended, but not required.
③ The Adhan and Iqamah remain valid and complete when done seated due to necessity.
