⫷ Sharʿī Ruling on Giving the Adhān at Home and Necessary Precautions ⫸
❖ Question:
Is it permissible to give the adhān (call to prayer) at home? Some people say it brings blessings and spiritual benefit—please clarify the correct Islamic ruling.
❖ Answer by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh:
① Permissibility of Giving Adhān at Home
Yes, it is permissible to give the adhān at home, provided certain conditions are fulfilled:
✔ If congregational prayer (jamāʿah) is being established within the home, then giving the adhān is permissible and valid.
② Social Perception and Risk of Fitnah
However, it is important to consider the societal context:
✘ If giving adhān from every home becomes a widespread practice, it could:
- Cause confusion or annoyance in the community
- Lead to misunderstanding or fitnah
✅ Since giving adhān in every household is not established as a general Sunnah, it is better to avoid turning it into a public custom.
③ Adhān in Special Circumstances
In some authentic narrations, adhān was given at home in specific situations—e.g., when one missed congregational prayer and performed jamāʿah at home.
✔ This was occasional, not a habitual practice for every home.
④ Volume of the Adhān
If adhān is given at home:
✔ It should be low in volume, heard only within the four walls
✘ It should not be loud like the masjid’s adhān
✘ It must not disturb or mimic the public call to prayer
❖ Summary:
✔ Adhān at home is allowed if you are establishing jamāʿah.
✔ Avoid making it a public norm or causing societal discomfort.
✔ If done, keep the volume low and within the household.
✔ Observe wisdom and caution to avoid misunderstandings or fitnah.
InshāʾAllāh, there is no harm in doing so with the right intention and proper limits.
