Authenticity of the Duʿā’: “اللَّهُمَّ اجعلني صَبُورًا وَاجعلني شَكُورًا…”
✍️ Answered by: Shaykh Hafiz Khizr Hayat حفظه الله

❖ Question:

What is the status of the Hadith containing the supplication:
“اللَّهُمَّ اجعلني صَبُورًا وَاجعلني شَكُورًا…”?
If the Hadith is weak, can this supplication still be made?

❖ Answer:

This narration is not authentic in terms of its chain (Isnād). A number of scholars of Hadith have declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) or even munkar (denounced).

✿ Scholarly Evaluations of the Chain

◈ Imam al-Bazzār (رحمه الله):

He narrated this Hadith and said:

“We do not know of anyone who reported it from ʿAbdullah bin Buraydah from his father except ʿUqbah al-Aṣamm, and he is a man from Basrah who is not strong.”
📚 Musnad al-Bazzār: 10/315, Ḥadīth 4439

◈ Imam Abū Ḥātim (رحمه الله):

When asked about this Hadith, he said:

“هَذَا حديثٌ منكرٌ لا يُعرَفُ، وعُقْبةُ ليِّنُ الْحَدِيث“
“This is a munkar (denounced) Hadith, not known. ʿUqbah is weak in Hadith.”
📚 ʿIlal Ibn Abī Ḥātim: 5/274

◈ Imām Haythamī (رحمه الله):

“Narrated by al-Bazzār; in its chain is ʿUqbah bin ʿAbdillah al-Aṣamm, and he is weak.”
📚 Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid: 10/181

◈ Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله):

Declared the Hadith Munkar
📚 al-Silsilah al-Ḍaʿīfah: 2/313, No. 911

❖ Can This Duʿā’ Be Recited Despite Its Weak Chain?

Yes — as a personal supplication, it is permissible to say this duʿā’ because:

✔ Its meaning is sound,
✔ The wording is free from any Shari‘ah violation, and
✔ It has been included by scholars in works on supplications and encouragement:

  • Imam al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb
  • Imam al-Shawkānī in Tuḥfat al-Dhākirīn
  • Imam al-Manāwī and al-Ṣanʿānī in their commentaries on al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr

✿ Guidelines from Shaykh Bakr Abū Zayd (رحمه الله):

Non-Prophetic supplications (not established from the Sunnah) can be used under 5 conditions:

① Clarity and excellence of wording, suitable for addressing Allah
② Conformity to Arabic linguistic rules
③ Absence of anything prohibited, like shirk or bid‘ah
④ Not restricting the duʿā’ to specific times or places
⑤ Not treating it as Sunnah or obligatory

📚 Taṣḥīḥ al-Duʿā’: 42–43

✅ Conclusion:

◈ This Hadith is weak and should not be cited as part of authentic Sunnah.
◈ However, reciting the duʿā’ itself is permissible, as its content is meaningful and Shari‘ah-compliant.
◈ One must not attribute it to the Prophet ﷺ, nor consider it specifically prescribed.
