🕌 The Prescribed Method of Iqamah and the Importance of Order in the Mosque 🕌
❖ Question:
Who should give the Iqamah for Salah?
And what is the ruling if someone begins the Iqamah before the designated Mu’adhin?
❖ Answer by:
Fadhilatul-‘Aalim Hafiz Khizr Hayat (حفظه الله)
① Responsibility of Iqamah:
✔ The responsibility of giving the Iqamah lies with the individual appointed specifically for this task, or the one who has already given the Adhan in the mosque.
✔ If someone else wishes to give the Iqamah, it is necessary for them to obtain permission from the designated Mu’adhin or the mosque administration.
✔ Those individuals who habitually begin the Iqamah without any prior permission are acting inappropriately, and such behavior goes against the system and discipline of the mosque.
② Clarification from Hadith:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“مَنْ أَذَّنَ فَهُوَ يُقِيمُ“
“Whoever gives the Adhan should also give the Iqamah.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 199]
🔸 However, this Hadith is weak, and therefore, it is not necessary that the one who gives the Adhan must also give the Iqamah.
🔸 If someone else gives the Iqamah with the permission of the Mu’adhin, there is no harm in it.
③ Order in Imamah and Iqamah:
✔ Just as appointing an Imam is essential for the proper conduct of Salah, similarly, appointing or designating a person for Iqamah is also important.
✔ This ensures that the system and order of the congregation (Jama‘ah) remain intact.
❖ Summary:
❀ The Iqamah should be given by the person appointed by the Mu’adhin or the mosque administration.
❀ It is permissible for someone else to give the Iqamah, provided they have received permission.
❀ Beginning the Iqamah without permission is inappropriate.
❀ The Hadith “Whoever gives the Adhan should also give the Iqamah” is weak, hence there is room for flexibility in the matter of Iqamah.
