❖ Duration of Menstruation and Rulings on Post-Menstrual Bleeding ❖
Answered by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh & Shaykh Dāʾūd Ismāʿīl ḥafiẓahullāh

❀ Question:

  • What is the maximum duration of menstruation (ḥayḍ)?
  • If bleeding continues after the normal menstrual days are over, what is its ruling?
  • Can a woman pray, fast, or engage in marital relations during that time?

❖ Islamic Legal Perspective

This is considered among the more complex issues of Fiqh, as Sharīʿah does not specify a fixed minimum or maximum for the days of menstruation.

❀ Key Points to Understand

➊ No Fixed Limit in Sharīʿah

There is no explicit Qur’anic or Hadith-based restriction on how short or long a menstrual period can be.
Factors such as environment, body constitution, and hereditary patterns (e.g., from mother, maternal grandmother, maternal aunt) may influence the menstrual cycle.

➋ Imām al-Bukhārī’s Indication

Imām al-Bukhārī (رحمه الله) hinted that:

Women are more aware of their own menstrual patterns.

Thus, the original days of menstruation (e.g., 5 or 7 days in previous cycles) should be considered the true duration of ḥayḍ.
Any bleeding beyond that is considered istiḥāḍah (non-menstrual, irregular bleeding).

➌ What Should Be Done in the Case of Istiḥāḍah?

  • Once a woman’s usual days of menstruation are completed, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and begin offering prayers.
  • A woman experiencing istiḥāḍah can pray and fast.
  • Her husband is allowed to have marital relations with her, if she agrees willingly.

Key Distinction Between the Two:

Menstrual Blood (Ḥayḍ) Irregular Bleeding (Istiḥāḍah)
Dark in color Light or reddish
Thick and sticky Thin and watery
Has a strong odor Odorless or mild

A woman can differentiate based on color, texture, and smell of the blood.

➍ View of Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (رحمه الله):

“لَا حَدَّ لِأَقَلِّهِ وَلَا لِأَكْثَرِهِ عَلَى الرَّاجِحِ، مَا كَانَ الدَّمُ جَارِيًا فَهُوَ حَيْضٌ، الْعِبْرَةُ بِالتَّمْيِيزِ بَيْنَ دَمِ الْحَيْضِ وَغَيْرِهِ مِنَ الدِّمَاءِ.”
“According to the stronger view, there is no limit to the minimum or maximum duration of menstruation. As long as the bleeding fits the characteristics of menstrual blood, it is considered ḥayḍ. What matters is the ability to distinguish between different types of blood.”

✅ Summary of Rulings

❖ No fixed duration for minimum or maximum length of menstruation.
❖ A woman should base her ruling on her past experience and personal cycle.
❖ If bleeding continues after her usual days, and it differs in appearance, then it is classified as istiḥāḍah.
❖ In istiḥāḍah, she must pray, can fast, and is permissible for intimacy with her husband.
