❖ Question:

A narration is mentioned that whoever does not have the ability to perform qurbānī, if he refrains from cutting his nails and hair after the sighting of the moon until after the ʿĪd prayer, he will receive the reward equal to a sacrifice. Is this ḥadīth authentic? And should the one performing qurbānī avoid cutting nails and hair?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

  • The statement that a person who does not have the ability to sacrifice, if he refrains from cutting his nails and hair after the sighting of the moon until the ʿĪd prayer, will receive reward equal to a sacrifice —
✦ This specific wording is not part of the authentic ḥadīth.
✦ It appears to be an addition made by someone, not something established from the Prophet ﷺ.

✔ Authentic Ruling for the One Performing Qurbānī:

  • For the person intending to perform qurbānī:
◈ When the new moon of Dhul-Ḥijjah is sighted, he should not cut his nails or hair until after he has offered his sacrifice.

This is authentically proven in ḥadīth.

✅ Conclusion:

  • The narration about the non-sacrificer getting reward equal to qurbānī by refraining from nails and hair cutting is not authentic.
  • But for the sacrificer, refraining from cutting nails and hair until after sacrifice is established in Sunnah.
