❖ Question
Is dowry (jahez) a curse? Is the giver of dowry a disbeliever? Is he an eternal Hell-dweller? Can a guardian/father/walī give some household items to his daughter at the time of marriage? Kindly explain in the light of Qur’an and Sunnah.
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu waṣ-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
From what is known to me, there is no authentic evidence proving that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever gave dowry. The narration often cited on this subject does not reach the level of authenticity — it is weak or unreliable, and therefore a Sharʿi ruling cannot be established from it.
Accordingly, it is baseless to assert that:
◈ Dowry is a curse,
◈ The giver of dowry is a disbeliever,
◈ Or that he will dwell in Hell eternally.
Such claims are without evidence and have no support from the Qur’an or Sunnah.
As for the guardian/father/walī giving items to his daughter at the time of marriage:
◈ If this is done willingly, happily, and without compulsion or show-off, there is no Sharʿi objection. This may simply be considered a gift from parents to their daughter, similar to giving on other happy occasions.
◈ However, if items are given under social pressure, customs, or due to demands from the groom’s side, then this practice is disliked in Sharīʿah and should be avoided.
