The main purpose of this article is to clarify how disobedience to Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ, sins, and immoral acts have destructive, dangerous, and ruinous effects on a person’s life, heart, sustenance, blessings, character, honor, and the peace and tranquility of an entire nation.

In this part of the article, we will first explain the importance of obedience and compliance, then clarify what effects sins produce in an individual’s life. In the following sections, the collective effects on the nation and community will be discussed.

The true message of Islam is that a person should submit completely to the command of their Lord and make the sayings of the Noble Prophet ﷺ the constitution of their life. Without this, success in this world and salvation in the Hereafter are impossible.

The Reality of Obedience and Its Fruits

Obedience to Allah Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ is the fundamental principle of every Muslim’s life. The Holy Quran contains numerous verses that describe the virtue of obedience to Allah and His Messenger.

Quranic Evidence No. 1

Reference: Al-Ahzab: 71

Translation: “Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success.”

This verse indicates that the result of obedience is great prosperity in both this world and the Hereafter.

Quranic Evidence No. 2

Reference: Al-Ahzab: 36

Translation: “And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly gone astray into clear error.”

This verse clarifies that the path of disobedience is certainly one of misguidance.

The Outcome of Obedience and Disobedience in the Hereafter

In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has explained not only the worldly consequences but also the ultimate outcome in the Hereafter with great clarity:

Verses

Reference: An-Nisa: 13-14

Translation:
“Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow… and that is the ultimate success.
And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him to Hell… and for him is a humiliating punishment.”

Effects of Sins — Two Types

Before proceeding further in the article, it is important to understand that:

❀ The effects of sins are of two kinds:
➊ Individual — which affect the disobedient person himself.
➋ Collective — which befall the nation, society, and state.

In this section, we will describe the individual effects.

Harmful Effects of Sins on Individuals

The Heart Becoming Rusty

Sins place black stains on the heart, and continuous sins darken the entire heart.
Hadith

Reference: Tirmidhi: 3334, Ibn Majah: 4244

Translation:
“When a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart… If he repents, the heart is cleansed, but if he continues to sin, this blackness covers the entire heart. This is the rust mentioned in the Quran:
﴿ کَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلٰی قُلُوْبِہِمْ مَّا کَانُوْا یَکْسِبُوْنَ ﴾”

Reference: At-Tirmidhi: 3334: Hasan Sahih, Ibn Majah: 4244 and Hasanah Al-Albani

Translation:

“Never! Rather, on their hearts is the rust which they have earned (meaning their sins have hardened and darkened their hearts).”

The darkness of the heart affects a person’s personality, character, and deeds, to the extent that the darkness begins to show on their face as well.

Falling Honor in the Sight of Allah

Through sins, a person falls from the sight of Allah.
Hadith

Reference: Musnad Ahmad

Translation:
“Avoid sins, for sins inevitably bring about the wrath of Allah.”

And when Allah becomes angry:

﴿ وَمَنْ یُّھِنِ اللّٰہُ فَمَالَہٗ مِنْ مُّکْرِمٍ ﴾

Reference: Al-Hajj: 18

Translation: “Whomever Allah humiliates, no one can honor.”

Becoming a Prisoner of Satan

Due to the abundance of sins, a person becomes subservient to Satan.

Reference: Az-Zukhruf: 36

Translation:
“Whoever becomes heedless of the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil who becomes his companion.”

Man Becoming Heedless of Himself

Reference: Al-Hashr: 19

Translation:
“They forgot Allah, so He caused them to forget themselves.”

Such a person neither recognizes the truth, nor can hear or understand goodness.

Restlessness and Distress in Life

Reference: Ta-Ha: 124

Translation:
“Whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life.”

Sins turn a person’s world into hell.

Loss of Blessings and Cessation of New Favors

The greatest misfortune of sins is that the current blessings are taken away and the blessings that were to come are also withheld. This is clearly seen in the story of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and Mother Eve (peace be upon her).
Verse

Reference: Al-Baqarah: 35-36

Translation:
“Do not approach this tree… then Satan caused them to slip and expelled them from the blessing and ease in which they had been.”

A minor disobedience took away the blessing like Paradise.
This principle continues until the Day of Judgment.

The End of Blessing

Sins are like a fire that burns blessings to ashes:

❀ No blessing in age
❀ No blessing in sustenance
❀ No blessing in wealth
❀ No blessing in children
❀ No blessing in the home
❀ No blessing in knowledge and deeds

In a house where there are sins, there is less goodness and more lack of blessing. On the contrary, righteousness increases everything and brings blessings.

The End of Modesty and Shame

Modesty is a great part of faith. The abundance of sins snatches away modesty from a person’s heart.
Hadith

Reference: Agreed upon

Translation:
“When there remains no modesty in you, then do as you wish.”

A sinful person:

❀ Begins to openly commit evil
❀ Has no modesty before Allah or people
❀ Does not mind if his wife or daughter goes out unveiled
❀ Does not feel bad if immoral programs are held in the house

All this is the result of the darkness of sins.

Deprivation of Sustenance

Sins often deprive a person of their expected sustenance. Many times, Allah brings sustenance to the door, but due to sin, it turns away.
Hadith

Reference: Ibn Majah: 90

Translation:
“A person is deprived of sustenance because of one of his sins.”

Today it is common to see people:

❀ Engaging in usurious transactions
❀ Insurance
❀ Illegal share trading
❀ Greed
❀ Haram businesses

trying to become rich quickly, but the result is that the existing wealth also gets depleted along with its blessings.

One example given is:

If there is music, dancing, and sin happening in a poor person’s house, then the one who gives charity takes back his charity. It is as if the sustenance came to the door and then turned away because of sin.

Deprivation of Knowledge

The greatest deprivation is that a person becomes deprived of beneficial knowledge.
Knowledge is light, while sins extinguish this light.

That is why Imam Malik (RA) said to Imam Shafi’i (RA):

“Allah has placed light in your hearts; do not let it be extinguished by the darkness of sins.”

Imam Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) says:

شَكَوْتُ إِلَىٰ وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي
فَأرْشَدَنِي إِلَىٰ تَرْكِ المَعَاصِي

“I complained to Waki’ about my weak memory, and he advised me to abandon sin.”

The blessing of knowledge is lost due to sins.

Storm of Difficulties and Calamities

Sins fill a person’s life with calamities and troubles.
Verse

Reference: Ash-Shura: 30

Translation:
“Whatever calamity befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned; and many sins Allah forgives.”

Domestic quarrels, business troubles, mental stress, disobedience of children—
often all these are the result of a person’s own sins.

Difficulty in Tasks

Because of sins, a person’s affairs do not improve but worsen.
Goodness and piety make tasks easier.
Verse

Reference: At-Talaq: 4

Translation:
“Whoever fears Allah (avoids sins), He will make matters easy for him.”

But for the sinner, even the easiest task becomes difficult.

Loss of Good Deeds

This is the most dangerous misfortune of sins that they destroy a person’s good deeds, especially the sins committed in seclusion.
Hadith
Hadith of Hazrat Thawban (RA):

A nation will come whose good deeds will be like mountains of Ta’ama,
but Allah will scatter them like scattered particles…

Why?
Will they be disbelievers?
No!

Answer:

“They will be your own brothers, from your own people, they will also pray at night, but when forbidden things of Allah come before them in seclusion, they will not leave them.”

Reference: Ibn Majah: 4245

Sins committed in seclusion wipe out good deeds.

Collective consequences of sins and misdeeds

The effects of sins are so severe that nations are destroyed, societies become restless, oppression prevails, and peace and security vanish. These effects have been explained very clearly in the Quran and Hadith.

Corruption, destruction, and devastation in dryness and wetness

Today we see that:

❀ Mass killing and looting
❀ Theft, robbery, lawlessness
❀ Dishonoring of women
❀ Abduction of innocent children
❀ Economic destruction
❀ Bribery and corruption
❀ People’s disappointment with the judiciary and justice system
❀ Negligence of rulers
❀ Domination of enemies and internal discord

All this is not the result of an accidental system…
Rather, it is the true prophecy of the Quran.
Verse

Reference: Ar-Rum: 41

Translation:
“Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of people have earned, so He may let them taste some of their deeds, that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].”

As a result of sins:

❀ Nations become weak
❀ Enemies prevail
❀ Oppression becomes widespread
❀ The blessing of peace and security is lost
The tragic end of the first destroyed nations
Allah Almighty said:

Reference: Al-An’am: 6

Translation:
“We destroyed them because of their sins.”

And He said:

Reference: Al-Ankabut: 40

Translation:
“Every nation We seized for its sins.”

Upon some nations:

❀ Stones were thrown
❀ Some were caught screaming
❀ Some were swallowed by the earth
❀ Some were drowned in water

This is the way of Allah, which never changes.

The occurrence of earthquakes, tsunamis, and natural disasters

When sins increase on the earth, Allah causes the earth to move, as a result of which large cities are buried in dust within minutes.
Verse

Reference: An-Nahl: 45-47

Translation:
“Have those who do evil deeds felt secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them… or send upon them a continuous punishment?”
Mention of being swallowed by the earth in the end times
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(سَيَكُونُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ خَسْفٌ وَقَذْفٌ وَمَسْخٌ)

“In the last times, people will be swallowed by the earth, stones will rain down, and people’s faces will be disfigured.”

It was asked: When will this happen?

He ﷺ said:
“When music becomes widespread, singers increase, and alcohol is considered lawful.”

Reference: Sahih al-Jami’: 3665

Hadith

Reference: Ibn Majah: 4020

Translation:
“Some people in my nation will drink alcohol… there will be music and singing… then Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and some of them will be turned into monkeys and pigs.”

Today, the major earthquakes, tsunamis, and devastating disasters occurring worldwide are all the result of human actions according to Allah’s law.

The Spread of Disorder, Fear, and Terror

One major effect of sins is the loss of the blessing of peace.
Verse

Reference: An-Nahl: 112

Translation:
“When those people were ungrateful for Allah’s blessings, He imposed upon them a garment of hunger and fear.”

This is the condition we see happening in our society today.

❀ Life is not safe
❀ Honor is not safe
❀ Wealth is not safe
❀ Fear in homes
❀ Disorder on the streets
❀ Theft, murder, robbery, chaos everywhere

All of this is the result of collective sins.

Deadly Diseases, Inflation, Famine, Oppression by Rulers, and Civil War

These are the results that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated in a single comprehensive hadith:
Hadith
➊ When immorality becomes widespread among the people, plague and new diseases emerge.
➋ When there is a reduction in weights and measures, famine, inflation, and oppression by rulers are imposed.
➌ When zakat is withheld, rainfall is withheld.
➍ When the covenant of Allah and His Messenger is broken, the enemy gains dominance.
➎ When decisions are not made according to Allah’s law, the nation fights among itself.

Reference: Ibn Majah: 4019

This hadith is a complete depiction of our current situation.

Being Subjected to Humiliation and Disgrace

Today, the entire Muslim Ummah is suffering from humiliation, helplessness, weakness, and insignificance, which is not the result of any political plan or any global power—
rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself clearly stated the fundamental reason for this humiliation.
Hadith

Reference: Abu Dawood: 3462

Translation:
“When you start engaging in usurious transactions, hold onto the tails of cows (i.e., get lost in worldly life and agriculture), become content with farming, and abandon jihad…
then Allah will impose such humiliation upon you that it will not be lifted from you until you return to your religion.”

This hadith is a complete explanation of the current state of the Ummah:

❀ Widespread usury
❀ Worldliness
❀ Weak religious zeal
❀ Abandonment of the struggle against the self (jihad)
❀ Weak faith
❀ The world has become the agenda instead of religion

What is the result?

❀ The enemy is imposed upon us
❀ Our voice has no status in the world
❀ Our resources are in the hands of others
❀ The Ummah has become weightless in global politics

This humiliation will only be removed by one way:
Return to the religion.

Withdrawal of Allah’s help, turning victory into defeat

When sins are committed by an individual, the harm remains within his own circle,
but when disobedience comes from scholars, leaders, the nation, the army, or rulers, its consequences fall upon the entire Ummah.

The incident of the Battle of Uhud in the Holy Quran

First, Allah granted victory to the Muslims.
Then, as soon as the spoils of war appeared, some individuals disobeyed the command of the Prophet ﷺ.
Result:

❀ Seventy companions martyred
❀ The Prophet ﷺ injured
❀ Victory turned into defeat
Verse

Reference: Al Imran: 152

Translation:
“All this happened when you showed cowardice, disputed in the command of the Prophet ﷺ, and disobeyed.”

Another verse:

Reference: Al Imran: 165

Translation:
“Say: This calamity has come upon you because of what your own hands have done.”

Meaning Allah’s help never withdraws—
Those who disobey remove it themselves.

Internal turmoil, infighting, and civil war

This too is a deserved consequence of sins and abandoning the religion.
Hadith

Reference: Ibn Majah: 4019

Translation:
“When rulers stop judging according to Allah’s Book, Allah imposes fighting among them.”

Are we not witnessing this scene today?

❀ Muslims killing Muslims
❀ Countries divided by internal wars
❀ Sectarianism, political corruption, linguistic conflicts
❀ The nation standing against each other

These are the collective effects of sins according to the Quran and Hadith.

Enemy’s Domination Over the Ummah

The Ummah that once led the world, today cannot even defend itself.
Hadith

Reference: Ibn Majah: 4019

Translation:
“When they break the covenant of Allah and His Messenger, Allah will impose upon them a people who will seize a portion of their wealth.”

Today, this is happening in Muslim countries:

❀ Enemies occupy our lands
❀ Our wealth, resources, oil, minerals are in their hands
❀ We are dependent on their loans
❀ Our policies are made under their pressure

This is not hellfire, it is the punishment of sins.

Deadly Diseases, High Mortality, and Social Corruption

Ibn Abbas (RA) described these collective effects of sins very comprehensively:
Effect of Ibn Abbas (RA)

Reference: Muwatta Malik: 987

Translation:
“And when adultery becomes widespread in a nation, there is an increase in deaths among them.”

Finally, a Humble Supplication to Allah Almighty

O Allah! Protect us from individual and collective sins.
O Allah! Grant us the ability to repent and seek forgiveness.
O Allah! Remove all kinds of corruption from our nation, our homes, our hearts, and our society.
