The Holy Quran and the Prophetic Hadiths clearly inform the believers that the life of this world is a mixture of good and evil, and humans are tested through both. Sometimes through calamities, illnesses, poverty, and hardships, and sometimes through prosperity, health, wealth, and children — all these are stages of Allah Almighty’s testing ground. Similarly, desires, doubts, political and social unrest, the trials of media, insecurity, murder and destruction, and sectarianism also become tests for humans.

The purpose of this article is to convey to the readers, according to the Quran and Hadith, the types of trials and the Shariah principles to confront them, so that they can safeguard their religion during these times of tribulation.

The Life of This World is a Test of Good and Evil

The very first reality is that the world is created from a mixture of good and evil, and humans are subjected to trials through both.

Quranic Evidence

Reference: Al-Anbiya: 35

Translation:
“And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.”

Meaning:

❀ Sometimes tested with hardships and pain
❀ Sometimes tested with prosperity
❀ Sometimes tested with illness
❀ Sometimes tested with health
❀ Sometimes with poverty and hunger
❀ Sometimes with abundance of wealth

In short, Allah Almighty tests His servant in every condition to see who becomes grateful and who shows ingratitude, who is patient and who shows impatience.

From this, it becomes clear that it is necessary for the people of faith to face trials in this world, because these tests reveal the true nature of the servant.

Types of Trials

According to the Quran and Hadith, there are many forms of trials, among which some important types are as follows:

➊ Trial of Wealth and Children

These are the trials due to which a person becomes heedless of obeying Allah.

It is stated in the Holy Quran:

﴿ إِنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلَادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ ﴾

Reference: At-Taghabun: 15

Translation:
“Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.”

A person sometimes becomes so entangled in wealth, business, and worldly engagements that he becomes heedless of religion, and sometimes the love for children prevents him from performing obligatory acts of worship and obeying Allah.

Another Verse

Reference: Al-Fath: 11

Translation:
“They kept us busy with our wealth and our children.”

These were the people whom wealth and children prevented from striving in the way of Allah — and this became a trial for them.

➋ The Trial of Desires

The adornment of the world and the desires of the self can lead a person towards misguidance. Allah Almighty has adorned these desires in the human heart as a test.

The Quran says:

Reference: Al-Imran: 14

Translation:
“Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire — women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, cattle and tilled land.”

Then He said:

“All of that is the provision of the worldly life.”

➌ The Trial of Doubts

This trial arises when some people deliberately mix truth with falsehood, present incorrect interpretations, distort facts, and create doubts and suspicions in people’s minds through their smooth talk.

Such people argue without knowledge, give misleading arguments, and create discord among the public.

➍ The Trial of Media

The greatest trial of today’s era:

❀ Electronic media
❀ Print media
❀ Social media

It has made immorality, nudity, shamelessness, and moral destruction widespread. Everything is reaching every person with open access; no veil remains. Whether small or big, male or female — forbidden content has become easily accessible to all.

The trial is spreading like pouring oil on fire.

➎ The Trial of Insecurity, Murder, Looting, and Social Discord

The conditions seen today in many Islamic countries—

❀ Neither life is safe
❀ Nor wealth is safe
❀ Nor honor is safe
❀ Neither homes, nor markets, nor roads

These are all among the trials that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had foretold.

Hadith

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 7061, Sahih Muslim 157

Translation:
“The time will draw near, knowledge will be taken away (meaning only the name will remain, the practice will end), trials will appear, stinginess (greed) will be placed in people’s hearts, and killings will increase.”

Meaning of the Nearness of Time

Scholars have explained two meanings:

❶ Corruption and evil will spread very rapidly
❷ The blessing of time will end — there will be a desire to do much, but time will not permit

Today, through media and the internet, corruption spreads worldwide in an instant — this is the practical manifestation of this hadith.

➏ The Trial of Sectarianism and Grouping

The greatest wound of the Muslim Ummah is sectarianism.
The Ummah whose:

❀ Lord is One
❀ Prophet is One
❀ Qiblah is One
❀ Quran is One
❀ Shariah is One

This same Ummah has today been divided into countless sects, and every group is pleased with its own way.

Quranic Evidence

Translation:
“Every group is pleased with what it has.”

The result is that the common people remain confused —
Which group is on the truth?
Which is on falsehood?
Whom should they accept? Whom should they reject?
This confusion itself is a great trial.

➐ Extremely serious and faith-shaking trials

The Holy Prophet ﷺ warned about extremely dangerous trials well before they occurred during his blessed life.

Hadith

Reference: Sahih Muslim 118

Translation:
“Hasten to do good deeds before trials come that will be like fragments of a dark night.
In that era, a person will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, or a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by morning.
He will sell his religion for worldly wealth.”

This hadith is a remarkable depiction of the current times —

❀ Increase in apostasy
❀ Skepticism
❀ Liberalism
❀ Commercialization of religion
❀ Abandoning religion for worldly gains

These are all the trials that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ foretold.

➑ The Prophet ﷺ rising in alarm at the onset of trials

Narration of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her):

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose anxiously and said:

(( سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ! مَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْخَزَائِنِ! وَمَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ! ))

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 7069

Translation:
“Glory be to Allah! How many treasures have been revealed today and how many trials have been sent down!”

Then he explained the way to protect oneself from trials:

(( من يُوقِظُ صَوَاحِبَ الحُجُرَاتِ… لِيُصَلِّينَ ))

“Who will awaken the pure wives so that they may pray.”

Meaning, worship is the shield that protects from trials.

➒ Severe trials before the Day of Judgment

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that near the Day of Judgment, the speed of trials will increase:

❀ Some trials will come like gusts of hot wind
❀ Some will come crashing like waves of the sea
❀ They will shake the hearts
❀ Truth and falsehood will become mixed up
❀ The eyes will see nothing clearly
❀ People will be believers in the morning and disbelievers by evening

These are the trials that only those with strong faith can withstand.

➓ The testing of the believers — The Divine Sunnah

Allah Almighty says:

Reference: Al-Ankabut: 2-3

Translation:
“Do people think that merely saying ‘We have believed’ will leave them alone and they will not be tested?
We tested previous nations as well, so that the truthful and the liars could be distinguished.”

Severe Trials of the Companions

Khubab رضي الله عنه narrates that the polytheists inflicted such hardships on the Companions that:

❀ Iron combs were run through their bodies
❀ An axe was placed on the head and split into two pieces
❀ Yet they did not abandon their religion

And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(( وَلَيُتِمَّنَّ اللَّهُ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ… ))

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari: 3852

“Allah will surely complete this religion…”

⓫ The Unceasing Series of Tribulations and Their Severe Dangers

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described the tribulations near the Day of Judgment as a continuous series.

➤ Each tribulation will be more severe than the previous one
➤ Distinguishing between truth and falsehood will become difficult
➤ Hearts will be shaken
➤ Faith will begin to waver

This is why the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ repeatedly warned the Ummah that this era would be like a “dark night,” in which neither the path would be visible nor the truth easily recognized.

⓬ The Purpose of Some Tribulations — Testing the Faithful

A major aspect of tribulations is that Allah Almighty tests the patience, steadfastness, and truthfulness of the believers through them.

Quranic Evidence

Reference: Al-Ankabut: 2-3

Translation:
“Do people think that merely saying ‘We believe’ will leave them alone and they will not be tested? We tested those before them so that Allah may distinguish the truthful from the liars.”

Conditions of the Companions — Practical Example

Khabbab bin Aratt رضي الله عنه narrates that he came to the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while in severe pain. The polytheists were oppressing him harshly.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(( لَقَدْ كَانَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ… يُشَقُّ بِاثْنَيْنِ… ))

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3852

Translation:
“Before you, there were people upon whom iron combs were run until the flesh separated from the bones, yet they did not abandon their religion.
And they were cut into two pieces with a saw placed between their heads, but they remained steadfast…”

Then you ﷺ foretold:

“Allah will complete this religion until a person travels from Sana’a to Hadramaut and fears none but Allah.”

It is a fact proven by the Quran and Hadith that trials are a means of identifying the believers.

⓭ The Collective Scope of Tribulations — Both Good and Bad Are Affected

When a tribulation occurs, it does not only affect the oppressors but engulfs the entire nation.

The Holy Quran states:

﴿ وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً… ﴾

Reference: Al-Anfal: 25

Translation:
“Beware of a trial whose blow will not be limited to the wrongdoers but will encompass everyone.”

Therefore, when tribulation spreads, the whole society bears its effects —

❀ Loss of lives
❀ Loss of wealth
❀ Danger to faith
❀ Social chaos
❀ Moral degradation

This is why the Prophet ﷺ warned against trials and taught practical measures to avoid them.

⓮ Encouragement to go to the mountains to avoid trials

When the trial exceeds limits and a person feels unable to protect their faith, Shariah considers seclusion in such circumstances as a way of salvation.

Hadith

Narrated Abu Saeed Khudri

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Trials

Translation:
“Soon the best property of a Muslim will be goats, which he will take to the mountain peaks and rainy places, so that he may protect his religion from trials.”

This is evidence that protecting religion is paramount, even if worldly comfort and ease must be sacrificed.

⓯ Virtue of sitting apart during times of trials

Being active during trials, reacting, spreading news without verification — itself becomes a trial.

Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ said:

(( الْقَاعِدُ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْقَائِمِ… ))

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3601, Sahih Muslim 2886

Translation:
“The person sitting in trials is better than the one standing,
the one standing is better than the one walking,
and the one walking is better than the one running.”

Meaning, the more one keeps oneself away from trials, the safer one will be.

Then He said:

“Whoever finds a refuge, let him take refuge in it.”

⓰ True success — lies in staying safe from trials

In times of trials, true success is not to save the world, but to save one’s faith.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(( إِنَّ السَّعِيدَ لَمَنْ جُنِّبَ الْفِتَنَ… ))

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawood 4263

Translation:
“Fortunate is the one who is kept away from trials.
Fortunate is the one who is kept away from trials.
Fortunate is the one who is kept away from trials.
And woe and woe to the one who is afflicted by trials!”

Here, by repeating “fortunate” three times, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized its greatness.

➊ Seeking Allah’s protection from trials

The very first step to salvation from trials is that a person seeks refuge with Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Because there is no protector other than Him.

Hadith

Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:

(( تَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ، مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ))

Reference: Sahih Muslim 2867

Translation:
“Seek refuge with Allah from trials both apparent and hidden.”

When the Companions heard this, they immediately said:

نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ

Special Supplication Taught by the Prophet ﷺ

Allah also taught this supplication to His Prophet ﷺ:

(( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فِعْلَ الْخَيْرَاتِ… وَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ بِعِبَادِكَ فِتْنَةً فَاقْبِضْنِي إِلَيْكَ غَيْرَ مَفْتُونٍ ))

Reference: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3233

Translation:
“O Allah! When You decree a trial for Your servants, take me to Yourself without letting me be afflicted by it.”

Another Strong Emphasis

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says:

(( لَا يُنْجِي مِنْهَا إِلَّا دُعَاءٌ كَدُعَاءِ الْغَرِيقِ ))

Reference: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Translation:
“When a trial comes, salvation is only for the one who prays like a drowning person.”

Meaning with complete humility, focus, and intensity.

➋ Remaining Firm on the Belief in Tawheed

In times of trials, the thing most targeted is faith and belief. Therefore, the firmness in Tawheed and complete trust in Allah is the strongest support for a believer.

Quran Majeed

Reference: At-Taghabun: 11

Translation:
“Whatever calamity befalls, it is by the command of Allah, and whoever believes in Allah, He grants his heart (guidance and steadfastness).”

There are two great points in this verse:

❀ Every trial comes from Allah
❀ Complete faith in Allah grants the heart guidance, peace, and strength

Such a person does not panic in tribulations, nor falls into doubt, nor abandons the religion.

➌ Firmly holding onto the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ

In the darkness of trials, the Quran and Sunnah are light and illumination.
Whoever firmly holds onto both will never be misguided.

Quran Majeed

Reference: Al-Ma’idah: 15-16

Translation:
“A clear light and a book have come to you from Allah, by which Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the paths of peace and brings them out of darkness into the light.”

The Prophet ﷺ’s advice — the path made clear

Reference: Sunan Abu Dawood 4607

Translation:
“Hold firmly to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my rightly guided Caliphs, hold onto it strongly and never abandon it.”

Declaration of Salvation from Misguidance

In the Farewell Pilgrimage sermon, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(( تَرَكْتُ فِيكُمْ مَا لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدَهُ: كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَسُنَّتِي ))

Reference: Sahih al-Jami’ 2937

Translation:
“I am leaving among you two things, as long as you hold firmly to them, you will never be misguided:
The Book of Allah and my Sunnah.”

➍ Leaving Sectarianism and Holding Firmly to the Rope of Allah

Unity among the Muslim community is a fundamental condition to confront trials.

Quran Majeed

Reference: Al-Imran: 103

Translation:
“Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”

Sectarianism is the greatest root of trials.
The Quran and Sunnah are the strong rope that unites the Ummah.

➎ In Case of Disagreement, Refer the Matter to Allah and His Messenger

The principle of collective salvation for the entire Ummah is:

Quran Majeed

Reference: An-Nisa: 59

Translation:
“If you differ in anything, refer it to Allah and His Messenger.”

This verse declares that:

❀ No emotional decisions
❀ No group bias
❀ No personal opinions

Rather, the only solution to disagreement is to refer back to the Quran and Sunnah.

➏ Acquiring Religious Knowledge — Light in Tribulations

Tribulation is darkness, and knowledge is the lamp.
Whoever possesses knowledge recognizes the truth, identifies falsehood, and does not go astray.

The Holy Quran

Reference: At-Tawbah: 122

Translation:
“So that they may develop understanding in religion and warn their people, perhaps they will be saved (from tribulations).”

If there is no knowledge, whom do people follow?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Sahih Bukhari 100

Translation:
“People will take ignorant ones as their leaders; they will issue fatwas without knowledge, will themselves be misguided, and will mislead others.”

That is why Ahl al-Sunnah advise taking knowledge only from scholars who:

❀ Are experts in the Quran and Sunnah
❀ Follow the methodology of the Salaf
❀ Are trustworthy and reliable

➐ Staying Connected with the Muslim Community and Avoiding Division

The first victims of tribulations are those who separate themselves from the community.
The Prophet ﷺ clearly taught this principle:

✔ The congregation is protection
✔ Being alone is an open invitation to the attacks of Satan

Famous Hadith — Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him)

Hudhaifah bin Yamaan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked what should be done if the time of tribulations comes?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Bukhari 3606, Muslim 1847

Translation:
“Stick to the Muslim congregation and their Imam (ruler).”

Then he asked:

What if there is no congregation or ruler?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Muslim 1847

Translation:
“Stay away from all sects, even if you have to live by chewing the roots of trees.”

Warning about dying separated from the congregation

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Muslim 1849

Translation:
“Whoever leaves the congregation even by a span and dies, dies the death of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).”

This is an extremely serious warning.

➑ Remaining steadfast in worship during tribulations

The time of tribulations is such that people fall into heedlessness, desires, and disputes. In such times, the value of worship increases.

Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Muslim 2948

Translation:
“Worship during times of tribulations (killings and chaos) is like migrating to me.”

Worship during tribulations:

✔ Strengthens the heart
✔ Keeps faith fresh
✔ Protects a person from slips

➒ Adopting Taqwa (God-consciousness)

Taqwa is the door to every good and the means of protection from every evil.

Quran Majeed

Reference: Al-Anfal: 29

Translation:
“If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to distinguish between right and wrong).”

Furqan means:

✔ The truth will become clear
✔ Falsehood will be recognized
✔ The way will be shown in trials

Another verse

Reference: At-Talaq: 2-3

Translation:
“Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him from every difficulty and provide for him from sources he never imagined.”

The way out, i.e., salvation from trials, is found through Taqwa.

➓ Frequently repenting and seeking forgiveness

Trials mostly arise from the abundance of sins.
Therefore, frequent seeking of forgiveness is a major means of removing trials.

Quran Majeed

Reference: Al-Anfal: 33

Translation:
“Allah will not punish them while they are seeking forgiveness.”

Another verse

Reference: Al-An’am: 43

Translation:
“When Our punishment came upon them, why did they not beseech (for forgiveness)?”

Meaning, by beseeching and repenting, tribulations are removed.

⓫ Utilizing Free Time in Goodness

The greatest gateway to tribulations is heedlessness and free time.
That is why the Prophet ﷺ warned beforehand:

(( اِغْتَنِمْ خَمْسًا قَبْلَ خَمْسٍ ))

Reference: Mustadrak Hakim, Sahih al-Targhib 3355

❶ Youth before old age
❷ Health before sickness
❸ Wealth before poverty
❹ Free time before being busy
❺ Life before death

Translation:
“Consider five things as a blessing before five others come.”

Another Hadith — The Most Important Warning

“Hasten to perform good deeds before six things (occur).”

Reference: As-Silsilah As-Sahihah 979

The Prophet ﷺ commanded to hasten towards good deeds before six major tribulations arrive, which include:

✔ Foolish rulers
✔ Excessive policing
✔ Severing of kinship ties
✔ Killing and plundering
✔ Turning Quran recitation into singing
And so on.

All of these are fully manifesting in our times today.

⓬ Exercising Patience and Not Panicking

Patience is the foundation of success in tribulations.

Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Reference: Musnad Ahmad 2804

Translation:
“Know that help comes with patience.”

The Reward of Fifty Companions!

The Prophet ﷺ said about the Muslims of the era of trials:

(( لِلْمُتَمَسِّكِ بِدِينِهِ فِيهِنَّ أَجْرُ خَمْسِينَ مِنْكُمْ ))

Reference: As-Silsilah As-Saheehah 494

Translation:
“Whoever holds firmly to the religion during these trials will have the reward of fifty among you (the Companions).”

This is a great glad tidings for our time.

⓭ Beware of the Conspiracies of the Hypocrites

The biggest role in spreading trials is played by the hypocrites. These people outwardly live among Muslims but inwardly work against Islam and the people of Islam.

Allah Almighty said about the hypocrites:

﴿ لَوْ خَرَجُوا فِيكُمْ مَا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا… يَبْغُونَكُمُ الْفِتْنَةَ ﴾

Reference: At-Tawbah 47-48

Translation:
“If they had gone out with you, they would only have increased disorder among you and tried to cause you trouble.”

This is the character of hypocrites in every era:

✔ Creating doubt in religion
✔ Creating discord and mistrust among Muslims
✔ Spreading division in the ranks of Muslims
✔ Benefiting the enemies
✔ Spreading misguidance among the younger generation

Therefore:

❀ Do not believe their words
❀ Avoid their propaganda
❀ Try to understand the reality of the mischief they spread

⓴ Avoid haste — make decisions with patience and insight

Making quick decisions in times of turmoil, acting impulsively, reacting without investigation — these are the things that cause great harm.

Guidance from the Quran

Reference: An-Nisa 83

Translation:
“When they receive any news, whether of security or fear, they immediately spread it. Whereas if they had referred it to the Messenger ﷺ and those in authority among them, they would have known its reality.”

This verse teaches us:

❀ Do not spread every news forward
❀ Do not publicize everything immediately
❀ Always investigate sensitive and troubling news
❀ Consult wise, understanding, and responsible scholars

⓱ Mandatory investigation of social media news and rumors

Today, most mischief is caused by social media.
False news, edited videos, misinformation, propaganda — all these fuel turmoil.

Therefore, the Quran has commanded:

﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا ﴾

Reference: Al-Hujurat 6

Translation:
“O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance.”

This command applies today to:

✔ WhatsApp
✔ Facebook
✔ YouTube
✔ TikTok
✔ Print and electronic media

— everywhere.

Spreading news without investigation itself becomes a source of discord.

Conclusion

The era of trials has never been empty, neither before nor today. But the Quran and Sunnah have shown us a clear path.

A Muslim who:

✔ Is firm on Tawheed (monotheism)
✔ Follows the Quran and Sunnah
✔ Understands religion under the guidance of true scholars
✔ Remains connected to the Muslim community
✔ Adopts patience, piety, and worship
✔ And turns to Allah in every matter

Allah Almighty protects him from every trial.

In the end, the prayer is:

اَللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنَا مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْفِتَنِ، مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، وَثَبِّتْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى دِينِكَ۔ آمین
