It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): In the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I was suffering from severe pain. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! You see my illness. I am a man of wealth, and my only heir is my one daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No.” I said, “Half?” He said, “No.” Then I said, “A third?” He said, “A third is fine, though even that is much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Indeed, whatever you spend seeking Allah’s pleasure, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind by my companions?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “You will not be left behind. Whatever righteous deed you do, your rank and status will be raised thereby. It is hoped that you will live on so that some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed.” (Then he prayed:) “O Allah! Keep the migration of my companions firm, and do not turn them back on their heels.” But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt sorrow for Sa’d bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him), who died in Makkah.
