Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a certain battle. In Madinah, the time of his mother’s death approached, so people said to her: “Make a will regarding your wealth.” She replied: “What should I make a will about? The wealth belongs to Sa’d.” Before Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, she passed away. When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he was informed of the incident. So Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): “If I give charity on behalf of my mother, will she benefit from it?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Yes.” So Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Such-and-such gardens are charity on behalf of my mother.”
