Hadith 385

عَنِ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ ، عَنْ نُبَيْشَةَ ، قَالَ : سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُفْرِعُ فَرَعًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ فَرَعٌ تَغْذُوهُ مَاشِيَتُكَ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَحْمَلَ ذَبَحْتَهُ وَأَطْعَمْتَهُ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nabeesha (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Noble Prophet ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! In the days of ignorance, we used to slaughter the Fara’ (the first offspring of an animal). What is your command regarding this?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: "From every kind of grazing animal, one should slaughter an animal, but in such a way that its mother nurses it until it becomes fit for riding (i.e., matures), then slaughter it, and feed it fodder; this is better for you."
