Hadith 383

عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلابَةَ ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ ، قَالَ : كَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ فَزِعًا يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُصَلِّي حَتَّى انْجَلَتْ فَلَمَّا انْجَلَتْ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ نَاسًا يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لا يَكْسِفَانِ إِلا لِمَوْتِ عَظِيمٍ مِنَ الْعُظَمَاءِ وَلَيْسَ كَذَلِكَ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَصَلُّوا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), there was a solar eclipse. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out dragging his cloak in anxiety and continued to pray until the eclipse cleared. When the sky became clear, he said: "People think that the eclipse of the sun and the moon occurs due to the death of some great person. (They also express grief.) But this is absolutely not the case. The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life (these are signs of Allah). When you see an eclipse, perform prayer."
