Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is narrated that whoever makes a contract of manumission (mukatabah) with his slave for one hundred uqiyahs, and he (the slave) pays all of it except ten uqiyahs, he is (still) a slave."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has been given a contract of manumission (mukatabah) for one thousand uqiyahs and pays all of it except ten uqiyahs, he is still a slave; and whoever has been given a contract for one hundred dinars and pays all of it, but ten dinars remain, he is still a slave."
(b) In the narration of Amr bin Asim and Abu al-Walid it is: "The slave who has been given a contract for one hundred dinars and pays all of it, with only ten dinars remaining due from him, will remain a slave; and the slave who has been given a contract for one hundred uqiyahs, with only ten uqiyahs remaining, will remain a slave."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: "Any man who makes a contract of manumission (mukatabah) with his slave for one hundred uqiyahs, if the slave is unable to pay ten uqiyahs, he remains a slave."
Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his old (school): I do not know anyone who narrated this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except Amr bin Shu'ayb, and the fatwa of the muftis is according to this.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we hear (hadiths) from you (peace and blessings be upon him); do you (peace and blessings be upon him) permit me to write them down?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He says that the first thing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to the people of Makkah was this: "Two conditions in one sale are not permissible, a sale and a loan together are not permissible, nor is the sale of what has not come into one's guarantee permissible; and whoever has been given a contract of manumission (mukatabah) for one hundred dirhams and pays all the dirhams except ten dirhams, he is still a slave; or (whoever) has been given a contract for one hundred uqiyahs and pays all of it but one uqiyah remains, he is still a slave."
This is how I found it, and I do not consider it mahfuz (preserved).

Then he said to al-Sha'bi: Shurayh used to judge in this case that, when the mukatab dies, what remains due on his contract of manumission (mukatabah) is paid to his masters, and whatever remains goes to his heirs. He (al-Sha'bi) said: Shurayh judges in this by the judgement of Abdullah (bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him).

He says: I made a contract of manumission (mukatabah), then I came and stood at the door and sought permission in a way I had not used to seek it. She disapproved of that and said: O my son, why do you not come in? I said: O Mother of the Believers, I have made a contract of manumission. She said: Then come in to me as long as even one dirham remains due from you, for you remain owned (a slave) as long as even one dirham of your contract remains due from you.
