Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two women had their children with them. A wolf took away the child of one of them. She said (to the other): The wolf has taken your son. The other said: The wolf has taken your son. The case came before Dawud (peace be upon him), and he judged in favour of the elder. They then passed by Sulayman bin Dawud (peace be upon him) and told him what had happened. He said: Bring a knife, and I will divide him between the two. The younger one said: May Allah have mercy on you, do not do that; the son is hers. So he judged in favour of the younger one." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We had never heard the word "sikkin" (knife); we used to say "mudyah".

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A wolf ate the son of one of two women. They came to Dawud (peace be upon him) to have the case of the remaining one decided. He judged in favour of the elder. When they passed by Sulayman (peace be upon him), he asked: How was the judgement between you? They told him, and he said: Bring me a knife." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The first person I heard say "al-sikkin" (knife) was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); we used to call it only "al-mudyah". The younger one said: Why? He said: "So that he may be divided between the two." The younger one said: "Give the child to this elder one." The elder one said: "Divide him between us." Then he judged in favour of the younger one and said: "If the child were hers, she would never have agreed to have her child cut up."
