Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection. Beware of obscene speech, for Allah Almighty does not love obscene speech. And beware of miserliness, for it destroyed those who came before you: it ordered them to cut the ties of kinship, to be miserly and to commit sin, and they did these things." A man stood up and asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which Islam is best?" Imam Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding this hadith (that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said): "The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe." Imam al-Mas'udi (may Allah have mercy on him) says (that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said): "That the Muslims are safe from his tongue and his hand." Then the same man, or someone else, stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which emigration (hijrah) is best?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you leave what your Lord dislikes." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Emigration is of two kinds: 1 the emigration of the town-dweller, 2 the emigration of the desert-dweller."
"The desert-dweller responds when he is called and obeys when he is commanded, while the town-dweller's trial is greater and his reward is also greater."
Imam al-Mas'udi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man called out to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the best martyr?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whose horse is hamstrung and whose blood is shed."

It is reported from Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: We were reciting poetry near the House of Allah (the Ka'bah). Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us and said: Are you reciting poetry in the Sanctuary of Allah and beside the House of Allah? Then a Companion from the Ansar who was with us said: O Ibn al-Zubayr, there is no harm, as long as you do not corrupt yourself, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "used to forbid only that poetry whose subject is women and on which wealth is spent."
