Shurayh narrated from his father Hani (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he came in a delegation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard that they called him by the kunyah Abu al-Hakam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said: "Al-Hakam (the Judge) is Allah Almighty alone; why have you taken the kunyah Abu al-Hakam?" He said: "My people used to have me judge their disputes, and both parties would be satisfied." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How excellent this is! Do you have any children?" He said: "Shurayh, Muslim and Abdullah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is the eldest of them?" He said: "Shurayh." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take the kunyah Abu Shurayh."

Amir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There was a dispute between Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a garden. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) the arbiter. The two of them went, and Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) recognised his voice, opened the door and said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Had you sent someone, I would have come to you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The arbiter is come to in his own house."
