Mahmud bin al-Rabi' al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion who fought at Badr, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am blind, and I lead my people in prayer. When it rains, the valley between me and them floods, and I cannot come to the mosque to lead them in prayer. I would like you (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to my house and pray, so that I may take it as my place of prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will do so soon." Itban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the morning, after the day had risen, he (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked permission, and I gave him permission. After entering the house he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not sit down, but said: "Where would you like me to pray?" He said: I pointed to a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, we formed rows behind him, and he prayed two rak'ahs and then said the salam. We had prepared food for him and kept him back for it. The members of the household were called and they gathered. Someone said: Where is Malik bin al-Dukhshun? Some said: He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say that. Did he not say the testimony of faith seeking the pleasure of Allah?" He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: But we see his attention and goodwill directed towards the hypocrites. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says the testimony of faith seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah has made the Fire of Hell unlawful for him." Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Then I asked Husayn bin Muhammad al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him), who is one of Banu Salim and among their leaders, and he too confirmed the hadith of Mahmud bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him).
(b) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept the statement of the one who spoke against Malik bin al-Dukhshun that he was a hypocrite until it became clear on what basis he was saying it; then, when he explained it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not consider it hypocrisy, and so he rejected his statement.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A Muslim is to be counted as upright ('adl) so long as no doubt arises about him.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In our view too, so long as uprightness is established, he remains upright until doubt arises.
