Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Madinah when an epidemic had broken out there, because of which people were dying rapidly. I sat with Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). A funeral passed and the deceased was praised well, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become due." Then a second funeral passed and it too was praised, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become due." Then a third funeral passed and it was spoken of badly, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become due." Abu al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked: O Commander of the Believers! What has become due? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any Muslim for whom four men testify to his goodness, Allah will admit him to Paradise." The narrator said: We said: And three? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three." We said: And two? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two as well." Then we did not ask him about one.
