Iyas bin Salamah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition, and he mentioned the hadith, (saying): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him on his she-camel al-Adba'. I was heading towards Madinah and we were travelling along. There was a man of the Ansar who ran very fast, and he kept saying: "Will anyone race me to Madinah? Is there anyone to race?" He said this again and again. When I heard what he said, I said: "Do you not honour the honourable, nor hold the noble in awe?" He said: "No, except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), may my father and mother be ransomed for you, if you permit me, shall I race this man?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, then do so." He said: I leapt down, then I ran a hillock or two, then, catching up with him from behind, I gained on him and struck him between his shoulders. I said: "You have been beaten, by Allah!" He said: "I think so." He said: So I beat him to Madinah.

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman said that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him that she was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey while she was young. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Go ahead, go ahead." Then he said: "Come, let us race." So I outran him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the race, that is, I won. After that, once again I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Go ahead." Then he said: "Come, I want to race with you." But I had forgotten the earlier race, and my body had become heavy. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, a race in this condition?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will certainly do it." I raced him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) won. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is for that race."

When my body had become heavy, we raced again and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) won. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is in return for the first race."
