قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: قَالَ اللهُ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ فِيمَا نَدَبَ بِهِ أَهْلَ دِينِهِ: {وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ وَمِنْ رِبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِ عَدُوَّ اللهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ} [الأنفال: 60] فَزَعَمَ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ بِالتَّفْسِيرِ، أَنَّ الْقُوَّةَ هِيَ الرَّمْيُ.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Allah, exalted be His praise, said in what He urged the people of His religion to: 'And prepare against them whatever you are able of strength and of tethered horses, by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy.' [Surah al-Anfal: 60]

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الصَّقْرِ بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الشَّافِعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْآجُرِّيُّ، ح، وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَمْرِو بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ، أنبأ أَبُو يَعْلَى، قَالَا: ثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ شُفَيٍّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ: " {وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ} [الأنفال: ٦٠]، أَلَا إِنَّ الْقُوَّةَ الرَّمْيُ، أَلَا إِنَّ الْقُوَّةَ الرَّمْيُ أَلَا إِنَّ الْقُوَّةَ الرَّمْيُ "، رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ.
Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon on the pulpit, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "And prepare against them whatever you are able of strength." [Surah al-Anfal: 60] "In this verse, strength (al-quwwah) means archery." He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated these words three times.
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، أنبأ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " سَتُفْتَحُ لَكُمْ أَرَضُونَ، وَيَكْفِيكُمُ اللهُ الْمُؤْنَةَ، فَلَا يَعْجَزُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَلْهُوَ بِأَسْهُمِهِ "، رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ.
Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Soon you will conquer lands, and Allah will suffice you against hardship. Beware! Let nothing make you neglect your arrows."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا ابْنُ مِلْحَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى هُوَ ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي الْحَارِثُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ شَمَاسَةَ، أَنَّ فَقِيمًا اللَّخْمِيَّ، قَالَ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ: تَخْتَلِفُ بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ ⦗٢٣⦘ الْغَرَضَيْنِ، وَأَنْتَ كَبِيرٌ، يَشُقُّ عَلَيْكَ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ عُقْبَةُ: لَوْلَا كَلَامٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ أُعَانِهِ قَالَ: الْحَارِثُ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ شَمَاسَةَ: وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: " إِنَّهُ مَنْ عَلِمَ الرَّمْيَ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ تَرَكَهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا، أَوْ قَدْ عَصَى ". رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ.
It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Shumasah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Fuqaym al-Lakhmi said to Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him): You go back and forth between these two targets though you are old, and it is hard on you. Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had I not heard these words from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would not take this trouble upon myself. Al-Harith said that Ibn Shumasah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: What is that? He said that (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said): "Whoever, after coming to know archery or learning it, abandons it is not one of us," or he said: "He has disobeyed."
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ رُمْحٍ عَنِ اللَّيْثِ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: قَالَ الْحَارِثُ: فَقُلْتُ لِابْنِ شَمَاسَةَ: وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: " إِنَّهُ مَنْ عَلِمَ الرَّمْيَ الَّذِي تَرَكَهُ، فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا، أَوْ قَدْ عَصَى " أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أنبأ اللَّيْثُ، فَذَكَرَهُ.
Al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Ibn Shumasah (may Allah have mercy on him): What is that? He said: "Whoever learned archery and then abandoned it has no connection with us," or he said: "He has disobeyed."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، أنبأ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مَزْيَدٍ الْبَيْرُوتِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، ثنا أَبُو سَلَّامٍ الْأَسْوَدُ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ رَجُلًا رَامِيًا أُرَامِي عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ فَمَرَّ بِي ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا خَالِدُ، اخْرُجْ بِنَا نَرْمِي فَأَبْطَأْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا خَالِدُ، تَعَالَ أُحَدِّثْكَ مَا حَدَّثَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَوْ أَقُولُ لَكَ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُدْخِلُ بِالسَّهْمِ الْوَاحِدِ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ الْجَنَّةَ، صَانِعَهُ الَّذِي احْتَسَبَ فِي صَنْعَتِهِ الْخَيْرَ، وَمُنْبِلَهُ، وَالرَّامِيَ، ارْمُوا، وَارْكَبُوا، وَإِنْ تَرْمُوا أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ مِنْ أَنْ تَرْكَبُوا، وَلَيْسَ مِنَ اللهْوِ إِلَّا ثَلَاثَةٌ: تَأْدِيبُ الرَّجُلِ فَرَسَهُ، وَمُلَاعَبَتُهُ زَوْجَتَهُ، وَرَمْيُهُ بِنَبْلِهِ عَنْ قَوْسِهِ، وَمَنْ عَلِمَ الرَّمْيَ، ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ، فَهِيَ نِعْمَةٌ كَفَرَهَا ". وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مَزْيَدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ جَابِرٍ.
Khalid bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was a man given to archery, and I used to shoot together with Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him). One day he passed by me and said: "O Khalid! Come out with us and let us shoot." But I was a little late, so he said: "Khalid! Come quickly, let me tell you what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me, or let me say to you what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Because of a single arrow three persons will enter Paradise: (1) the one who makes the arrow, intending reward, (2) the one who shoots it, and (3) the one who hands the arrow to the archer." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Practise archery and practise horse riding, and archery is dearer to me than horse riding. Three things are not counted as idle play: (1) a man training his horse, (2) his playing with his wife, and (3) his shooting arrows from his bow. And whoever learned archery and then abandoned it has been ungrateful for a blessing."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ، ثنا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَّامٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْأَزْرَقِ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَيُدْخِلُ الثَّلَاثَةَ بِالسَّهْمِ الْوَاحِدِ الْجَنَّةَ: صَانِعَهُ يَحْتَسِبُ بِصَنْعَتِهِ الْخَيْرَ، وَالرَّامِيَ بِهِ، وَالْمُمِدَّ بِهِ ".
Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Allah Almighty will admit three people to Paradise because of a single arrow: the one who makes it, intending reward, the one who shoots it, and the one who assists him."
وَبِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " ارْمُوا وَارْكَبُوا، وَأَنْ تَرْمُوا أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ مِنْ أَنْ تَرْكَبُوا، وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ يَلْهُوَ بِهِ الرَّجُلُ بَاطِلٌ، إِلَّا رَمْيَ الرَّجُلِ بِقَوْسِهِ، أَوْ تَأْدِيبَهُ فَرَسَهُ، أَوْ مُلَاعَبَتَهُ امْرَأَتَهُ، فَإِنَّهُنَّ مِنَ الْحَقِّ، وَمَنْ تَرَكَ ⦗٢٤⦘ الرَّمْيَ بَعْدَ مَا عَلِمَهُ فَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِي عَلِمَهُ "، كَذَا فِي كِتَابِ ابْنِ يَزِيدَ، وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ.
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Practise archery and practise horse riding, and archery is dearer to me than horse riding. Every kind of play that a man engages in is futile, except shooting with a bow, training a horse and playing with one's wife; these are proper. Abandoning archery after learning it is as if one has been ungrateful (kufr) for something after coming to know it."
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا خَلَفُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْعُكْبَرِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُوَيْمِ بْنِ سَاعِدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، قَالَ: أَبْصَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا مَعَهُ قَوْسٌ فَارِسِيَّةٌ فَقَالَ: " اطْرَحْهَا، ثُمَّ أَشَارَ إِلَى الْقَوْسِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ، فَقَالَ: بِهَذِهِ، وَرِمَاحِ الْقَنَا يُمَكِّنُ اللهُ لَكُمْ بِهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ، وَيَنْصُرُكُمْ عَلَى عَدُوِّكُمْ "، تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ، وَفِيهِ انْقِطَاعٌ، عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُوَيْمٍ لَيْسَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ، وَقِيلَ فِي هَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ كَمَا.
Abd al-Rahman bin Salim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Uwaym narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a Persian bow in a man's hand and said: "Throw it away." He (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to an Arabic bow and said: "Through these bows and qana spears Allah will give you dominance in the lands and help you against your enemies."

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ أَبِي حَامِدٍ الْمُقْرِئُ، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الْحِزَامِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عُوَيْمِ بْنِ سَاعِدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى قَوْسًا فَارِسِيًّا، فَقَالَ: " مَلْعُونٌ، مَلْعُونٌ مَنْ حَمَلَهَا عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ "، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى الْقَوْسِ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ، وَبِرِمَاحِ الْقَنَا يُمَكِّنُ اللهُ لَكُمْ فِي الْبِلَادِ، وَيَنْصُرُكُمْ عَلَى عَدُوِّكُمْ ". قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ: عُتْبَةُ بْنُ عُوَيْمٍ لَمْ يَصِحَّ حَدِيثُهُ.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ فُورَكٍ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُسْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ الْحُبْرَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: عَمَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ غَدِيرِ خُمٍّ بِعِمَامَةٍ سَدَلَهَا خَلْفِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " إِنَّ اللهَ أَمَدَّنِي يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، وَحُنَيْنٍ بِمَلَائِكَةٍ يُعْتِمُونَ هَذِهِ الْعِمَّةَ "، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّ الْعِمَامَةَ حَاجِزَةٌ بَيْنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْإِيمَانِ "، وَرَأَى رَجُلًا يَرْمِي بِقَوْسٍ فَارِسِيَّةٍ فَقَالَ: " ارْمِ بِهَا "، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى قَوْسٍ عَرَبِيَّةٍ، فَقَالَ: " عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ وَأَمْثَالِهَا، وَرِمَاحِ الْقَنَا، فَإِنَّ بِهَذِهِ يُمَكِّنُ اللهُ لَكُمْ فِي الْبِلَادِ، وَيُؤَيِّدُكُمْ فِي النَّصْرِ "، أَشْعَثُ - هُوَ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ السَّمَّانُ وَلَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ، وَخَالَفَهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ فَرَوَاهُ ⦗٢٥⦘ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ هَذَا، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ الْبَهْرَانِيِّ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُنْقَطِعًا، وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُسْرٍ هَذَا لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ، قَالَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُ.
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put a turban on me on the day of Ghadir Khumm and let one end of it hang down behind me. Then he said: "Allah helped me on the day of Badr and Hunayn with angels wearing turbans like this," and he said: "This turban is a barrier between disbelief and faith." He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man shooting with a Persian bow, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Throw it away." Then he saw an Arabic bow and said: "Hold fast to this and ones like it, and to spears, through which Allah will give you dominance in the lands and help you against your enemies."
Ash'ath is Abu al-Rabi' al-Samman, and he is not strong. Isma'il bin Ayyash contradicted him and narrated it from this same Abdullah bin Busr, from Abd al-Rahman bin Adi al-Bahrani, from his brother Abd al-A'la, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as munqati' (with a broken chain). And this Abdullah bin Busr is not strong; Abu Dawud al-Sijistani and others said so.
Ash'ath is Abu al-Rabi' al-Samman, and he is not strong. Isma'il bin Ayyash contradicted him and narrated it from this same Abdullah bin Busr, from Abd al-Rahman bin Adi al-Bahrani, from his brother Abd al-A'la, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as munqati' (with a broken chain). And this Abdullah bin Busr is not strong; Abu Dawud al-Sijistani and others said so.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نَصْرِ بْنُ قَتَادَةَ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْبَزَّازُ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبُوشَنْجِيُّ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنُ عَائِشَةَ: قَالَ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ بِالْحَدِيثِ: إِنَّمَا نَهَى عَنِ الْقَوْسِ الْفَارِسِيَّةِ لِأَنَّهَا إِذَا انْقَطَعَ وَتَرُهَا لَمْ يَنْتَفِعْ بِهَا صَاحِبُهَا، وَأَنَّ الْقَوْسَ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ إِذَا انْقَطَعَ وَتَرُهَا كَانَتْ لَهُ عَصًا يَدِبُّ بِهَا، قَالَ: وَكَانَتْ مَعَهُمْ رِمَاحُ خَشَبٍ، فَكَانُوا إِذَا طَعَنُوا بِهَا أَخَذَهَا الْمَطْعُونُ فَكَسَرَهَا، فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِرِمَاحِ الْقَنَا لِكَيْ إِذَا طَعَنَ الرَّجُلُ، فَأَخَذَهُ الْمَطْعُونُ انْثَنَى، وَلَمْ يَنْكَسِرْ، وَكَانَتْ تُحْمَلُ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ ".
Abu Abd al-Rahman Ibn A'ishah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the scholars of hadith said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the Persian bow only because when the string of a Persian bow breaks, its owner cannot benefit from it, but when the string of an Arabic bow breaks, he uses it as a staff to walk with. They had wooden spears; when one was struck with them, the other would grab it and break it. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for spears that would bend but not break, and these were brought from Bahrain.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مَحْمَوَيْهِ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْقَلَانِسِيُّ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ قَالَ: أَتَانَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَنَحْنُ مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ " أَمَّا بَعْدُ: " فَاتَّزِرُوا وَانْتَعِلُوا وَارْتَدُوا وَأَلْقُوا الْخِفَافَ وَالسَّرَاوِيلَاتِ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِلِبَاسِ أَبِيكُمْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ، وَزِيَّ الْعَجَمِ، وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالشَّمْسِ، فَإِنَّهَا حَمَّامُ الْعَرَبِ، وَتَمَعْدَدُوا وَاخْشَوْشِنُوا وَاخْلَوْلِقُوا، وَاقْطَعُوا الرَّكْبَ وَانْزُوا عَلَى الْخَيْلِ نَزْوًا، وَارْمُوا الْأَغْرَاضَ، وَامْشُوا مَا بَيْنَهَا، وَذَكَرَ بَاقِيَ الْحَدِيثِ "..
Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A letter of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us while we were with Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) in Azerbaijan. He wrote: Wear the waist-wrap, wear sandals, put on the upper cloak, throw off leather socks and trousers, and wear the dress of your father Isma'il (peace be upon him). Beware of luxury and of imitating the non-Arabs. Keep to the sun, for it is the bath of the Arabs. Live simply like Ma'add, be tough and wear coarse, worn clothes. Cut off the stirrups and leap onto the horses. Shoot at targets and walk between them. And he mentioned the rest of the hadith.
وَرَوَيْنَا فِي كِتَابِ الْفَرَائِضِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ كَتَبَ إِلَى أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: " أَنْ عَلِّمُوا غِلْمَانَكُمُ الْعَوْمَ، وَمُقَاتِلَتَكُمُ الرَّمْيَ قَالَ: وَكَانُوا يَخْتَلِفُونَ بَيْنَ الْأَغْرَاضِ، فَجَاءَ سَهْمُ غَرْبٍ فَأَصَابَ غُلَامًا، فَقُتِلَ " وَذَكَرَ بَاقِيَ الْحَدِيثِ. أَخْبَرَنَاهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبَدَانَ أَنْبَأَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رِبْحٍ الْبَزَّازُ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ عَبَّادِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ قَالَ: كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِلَى أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ.
It is in the Book of Inheritance (Kitab al-Fara'id) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him): Teach your boys swimming and your fighters archery. They were shooting at different targets when a stray arrow came and struck a boy, and he was killed.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْفَضْلِ بْنُ أَبِي سَعْدٍ الْهَرَوِيُّ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا، أنبأ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَرِيرِيُّ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ⦗٢٦⦘ الْبَاغَنْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مِعْبَدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " وَجَبَتْ مَحَبَّتِي عَلَى مَنْ سَعَى بَيْنَ الْغَرَضَيْنِ بِقَوْسِي، لَا بِقَوْسِ كِسْرَى ".
Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My love has become due for the servant who strives in shooting at targets with my bow (that is, the Arabic bow), not with the Persian bow."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ يَحْيَى أَبُو الْأَصْبَغِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ الْجَزَرِيَّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ - يَعْنِي: ابْنَ بُخْتٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَجَابِرَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّيْنِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا يَرْتَمِيَانِ، فَمَلَّ أَحَدُهُمَا فَجَلَسَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ: أَجَلَسْتَ؟ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " كُلُّ شَيْءٍ لَيْسَ مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللهِ، فَهُوَ سَهْوٌ وَلَهْوٌ، إِلَّا أَرْبَعًا: مَشْيَ الرَّجُلِ بَيْنَ الْغَرَضَيْنِ وَتَأْدِيبَهُ فَرَسَهُ، وَتَعَلُّمَهُ السِّبَاحَةَ، وَمُلَاعَبَتَهُ أَهْلَهُ "، تَابَعَهُ إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ الْجَزَرِيِّ.
Ata' bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I saw Jabir bin Abdullah and Jabir bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) engaged in archery. One of them grew tired and sat down, so the other said to his companion: "Have you sat down? Did you not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Everything in which there is no remembrance of Allah is play and amusement, except four things: a man's target shooting, his training his horse, his learning to swim, and his playing with his wife.'"
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ السَّرَّاجِ، إِمْلَاءً، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبْدُوسٍ الطَّرَائِفِيُّ، أنبأ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ، ثنا بَقِيَّةُ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ مَوْلَى أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَلِلْوَلَدِ عَلَيْنَا حَقٌّ، كَحَقِّنَا عَلَيْهِمْ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ حَقُّ الْوَلَدِ عَلَى الْوَالِدِ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَهُ الْكِتَابَةَ، وَالسِّبَاحَةَ، وَالرَّمْيَ، وَأَنْ يُوَرِّثَهُ طَيِّبًا "، هَذَا حَدِيثٌ ضَعِيفٌ، عِيسَى بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ هَذَا مِنْ شُيُوخِ بَقِيَّةَ، مُنْكَرُ الْحَدِيثِ ضَعَّفَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ وَالْبُخَارِيُّ وَغَيْرُهُمَا.
Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), do children also have rights over their parents?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! The right of the child over the parent is that he teaches him writing, swimming and archery, and that he leaves him a wholesome inheritance."
This hadith is weak; this Isa bin Ibrahim al-Hashimi, one of the shaykhs of Baqiyyah, is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected); Yahya bin Ma'in, al-Bukhari and others declared him da'if (weak).
