Abu Uthman narrates from Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) (I think he narrated it as marfu'): "Allah made the lawful lawful and the unlawful unlawful. What He made lawful is lawful, what He made unlawful is unlawful, and what He kept silent about is permissible."

Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what the ruling is on ghee, cheese and furs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The lawful is what Allah has made lawful in His Book, the unlawful is what Allah has made unlawful in His Book, and what He kept silent about is permissible."

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a marfu' hadith: "Whatever Allah has declared lawful or unlawful in His Book, that alone is lawful or unlawful; and what He kept silent about, He has overlooked (that is, it is a concession). So accept Allah's concession, for He is not forgetful." Then he recited this verse: "And your Lord is not forgetful." [Surah Maryam: 64]

Makhul (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Allah Almighty has made obligations obligatory, so do not neglect them; He has set limits, so do not transgress them; He has forbidden certain things, so do not violate His commands about them; and He has kept silent about certain things as a concession, not out of forgetfulness, so do not dig into them."
This is mawquf (a statement of the Companion).
