Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that a horned ram with black legs, black eyes and a black belly be sacrificed, and said: "O Aishah, bring the knife." Then he said: "Sharpen it on a stone." When she had sharpened the knife, he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of a ram and slaughtered it, and said: 'Bismillah, Allahumma taqabbal min Muhammadin wa ali Muhammadin wa min ummati Muhammad' (In the name of Allah. O Allah, accept (it) on behalf of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the sacrifice.

When he had finished the prayer and the sermon, he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered one himself with a short spear and said: "This is on behalf of my entire Ummah, those who affirm Your Oneness and testify to my having conveyed (the message)." Then he slaughtered the other sacrifice and said: "O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad." Then he would feed (of it) himself, his family and the poor. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered one man to take hold of a foreleg, another of a foreleg, another of a hind leg, another of a horn and another of a horn, and the seventh slaughtered it, and we all said the takbir over it.
