Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah begin and one of you wishes to offer a sacrifice, let him not cut the hair from any part of his body." Sufyan was told that some people do not narrate this hadith as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet). He said: But I narrate it as marfu'.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah begin and one of you wishes to offer a sacrifice, let him refrain from cutting his hair and nails."

Umar bin Muslim bin Ammarah bin Ukaymah said: We were in the bathhouse before the sacrifice, and some people there applied depilatory paste. One of the people of the bathhouse said: Sa'id bin al-Musayyab dislikes this and forbids it. I met Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) and mentioned this to him, and he said: O my nephew, this is a hadith that has been forgotten and abandoned. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has an animal to sacrifice and intends to slaughter it, then when he sees the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah, let him not cut his hair or nails until he has offered the sacrifice."

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If someone asks: What shows that it (refraining from taking from the hair and nails) is a recommended choice and not obligatory? He is told: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I used to make the garlands for the sacrificial animals of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with my own hands; then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would garland them and send the sacrificial animals off with my father, and nothing became forbidden to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until the sacrifice was slaughtered.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this is evidence for what I have described, and that a person does not enter the state of ihram merely by sending off his sacrificial animal; and sending off a sacrificial animal is weightier than merely intending to offer a sacrifice.

Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on her) narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): I used to make the garlands for the sacrificial animals of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) myself. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would garland them and send them off with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and until the sacrifice was slaughtered, nothing of what Allah had made lawful became forbidden to him (peace and blessings be upon him).
