Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most handsome of people, the most generous of people and the bravest of all people. One night the people of Madinah were alarmed, and everyone rushed towards the sound. There they found the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) already present; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had reached the sound before everyone else, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Do not be afraid, do not be afraid." He (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding the bare back of the horse of Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), with no saddle on it, and the sword of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was hanging from his neck. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I found this horse as swift as the sea." Yet it had been a slow horse.

Hassan bin Fa'id narrates from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that bravery and cowardice are in people's nature: you will find a man fighting on behalf of someone he does not even know, and you will find a man fleeing from his own father. Nobility of lineage (hasab) means wealth, and honour (karam) means piety; being better than any Persian or non-Arab can only be on the basis of piety.
