Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "If (the imam) keeps them (at the frontier) for a long time and does not let them return home, he has done wrong, and it is permissible for all of them to oppose him and return (to their homes)."

Sayyiduna Abu Firas (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us in a sermon and said: O people! I do not send governors to you so that they beat your bodies and take your wealth; I send them so that they teach you your religion and your Sunnah. If any of them does anything other than this, bring his case to me and I will take retribution from him. Beware! Do not beat the Muslims and so humiliate them; do not drive the Muslims to disbelief by repeatedly scolding and denying them; and do not keep the fighters from returning to their homes, for if you keep them, they will fall into trial; and do not ruin the fighters by putting them on difficult paths.

Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik al-Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: An army of the Ansar was in Persia with their commander, and it was the practice of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to call armies back after a year. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became neglectful of them. When the appointed time passed, the people of that frontier came back. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was harsh with them and threatened them, even though they were Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): You neglected us, and in our case you abandoned the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "the armies should be brought back in turns."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out at night and heard the voice of a woman reciting poetry: The night has grown long and its sides have turned dark; what has robbed my nights of sleep is that I have no beloved. By Allah, were it not for Allah, I would have attended to him, and the sides of this bed would have moved.
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked his daughter Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her): How long at most can a woman endure without her husband? She said: Six months or four months. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not keep any army away longer than that.
