Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman said that she heard Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The hand is not to be cut off for a theft of less than the price of a shield." Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: What is its price? She said: A quarter of a dinar.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The thief's hand is not to be cut off except for the theft of a shield or of something worth more than it." Amrah said: I said to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): What was the price of a shield in those days? She said: A quarter of a dinar.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the price of a shield was equal to ten dirhams.
Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar narrated it this way, and al-Hakam bin Utaybah contradicted him, narrating it from Ata and Mujahid from Ayman al-Habashi.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Ayman that it used to be said: "The thief's hand is not to be cut off except for the theft of a shield or something more valuable." And he said: In those days the price of a shield was equal to one dinar.
His (Ayman's) narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is munqati' (disconnected).

Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to some people: "The Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is that the hand be cut off for a quarter of a dinar or more. So how can you say that the hand is not to be cut off except for ten dirhams or more? What is your proof for this?" He said: "We have narrated from Sharik, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Ayman, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), something resembling our view." I said: "Do you know who Ayman is? The Ayman from whom Ata narrates was a young man, perhaps younger than Ata, and Ata narrated from him a hadith from Tabi', the son of Ka'b's wife, from Ka'b. So this is munqati' (disconnected), and a munqati' hadith is not a proof." He said: "Sharik bin Abdullah narrated it from Mujahid, from Ayman bin Umm Ayman, the maternal brother of Usamah." I said: "You have no knowledge of our companions. Ayman, the brother of Usamah, was killed alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn, before Mujahid was born, and he did not live on after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so as to narrate from him."
The Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The narration of Ata from Ayman to which al-Shafi'i alluded is a different hadith from this one.

Ka'b said: Whoever performs ablution and performs it well, then prays the Isha prayer, and after it prays four more rak'ahs, completing their bowing and prostrations and learning what he recites in them, they will be for him equal to Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree).
Al-Bukhari alluded to this in al-Tarikh, and he and others took it as evidence that Ayman's hadith about the price of the shield is munqati' (disconnected).

Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the price of a shield was equal to ten dirhams.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب السرقة / 17177
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is an opinion of Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the narration of Amr bin Shu'ayb. Shields, in former times and recent, are goods whose price may be ten, a hundred, or two dirhams. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cut off the hand for a quarter of a dinar, it would be cut off for more than that too. And you claim that Amr bin Shu'ayb is not one whose narration is accepted, and you reject against us Sunnahs that he narrated which agree with our views, saying: He erred. So how can you reject his narration at one time, and then use him as a proof against the people of memorisation and truthfulness, even though he did not narrate anything that contradicts our view?
