Talhah bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr says: Whenever Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent his commanders to fight the apostates (ahl al-riddah), he would instruct them: When you reach their dwellings, stop. If you hear the call to prayer (adhan), ask them the reason for their grievance; if you do not hear the adhan, then attack: strike them, kill, burn and wound. Let no weakness come over you because of the death of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to the people of al-Nahr to fight the Khawarij, and I invited them (to return) three times before we fought them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Haruriyyah came out, they were six thousand. I came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Commander of the Believers, delay the Zuhr prayer until it is cooler, so that I may go to these people and speak with them." He said: "I fear for you." I said: "Not at all." He says: I went out, put on an excellent Yemeni robe (hullah), and went to them. They were all gathered in a house. I greeted them with salam; they welcomed me and asked: "What is this robe?" I said: "You find fault with this robe! I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a finer robe than this, and this verse was also revealed: 'Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of provision?' [Surah al-A'raf: 32]." They said: "Why have you come?" I said: "I have come from the Companions, the Muhajirun and the Ansar, to convey their words to you and yours to them. The Qur'an was revealed in their time, they know the revelation better than you, and there is not one of those people among you." Some of them said: "Do not argue with Quraysh, for Allah says: 'Rather, they are a quarrelsome people' [Surah al-Zukhruf: 58]." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I have never seen people exceed them in striving (in worship): their faces were swollen from staying awake at night, their hands and feet seemed dried up, and on their bodies were garments soaked with sweat. Some of them said: "We will certainly speak with him and consider what he says." I said: "Tell me, what grievance do you have against Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), his group, the Muhajirun and the Ansar?" They said: "Three." I said: "Which are they?" The first is that he made men judges in the affair of Allah, whereas Allah says: 'The judgment belongs only to Allah' [Surah al-An'am: 57]; so what have men to do with judgment? I said: "That is one." I said: "The second grievance?" They said that they fought one another, yet no one took anyone captive nor seized any spoils: if one side were disbelievers, why were they not taken as captives and spoils? And if both were Muslims, how did fighting them become lawful? I said: "That makes two; tell me the third." They said that he erased 'Commander of the Believers' from beside his name — so is he then the commander of the disbelievers? I said: "Do you have any other objection?" They said: "No." I said: "If I answer your objections from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, will you accept?" They said: "Yes." So I said to them: "As for your objection that he made men judges in the affair of Allah (that is, had them decide): I will recite to you a verse of the Qur'an in which judgment was referred to men, concerning a quarter of a dirham's worth, regarding a hare and other game like it. He said: 'O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram' [Surah al-Ma'idah: 95]. So tell me: you accept their judgment concerning a hare, yet why do you not accept them as judges over their own blood and for reconciliation among themselves? (This) if you know that, had Allah willed, He would have judged between them Himself and not referred it to men. And concerning husband and wife Allah says: 'And if you fear a breach between the two, then send an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family; if they both desire reconciliation, Allah will bring about agreement between them' [Surah al-Nisa': 35]. So appointing arbiters among people is an established way of Allah. Is this objection of yours refuted by this?" They said: "Yes."
And as for your saying that they fought one another but took no captives and seized no spoils: I ask you, would you take your mother, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), captive, and would the same things then become lawful with her that are lawful with others? If you say yes, it is lawful, you are disbelievers, for she is your mother; and if you deny that she is your mother, you are disbelievers then too, for the Lord of the worlds says: 'The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers' [Surah al-Ahzab: 6]. You are in misguidance on both sides; now fall into whichever misguidance you please. They began looking at one another. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "Have I answered this one too?" They said: "Yes." He said: "As for your third objection, that he removed the title 'Commander of the Believers' from his name, I will give you a proof that you will surely accept. You have heard the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which says that on the day of al-Hudaybiyah, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew up a written agreement with the polytheists — on whose side were Suhayl bin Amr and Abu Sufyan — the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Commander of the Believers: 'O Ali, write: This is a peace agreement from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).' The polytheists said: 'No, by Allah! If we accepted you as the Messenger of Allah, what would the quarrel be about?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Allah, You know that I am Your Messenger.' O Ali, write it thus: 'This is a peace agreement from Muhammad bin Abdullah (peace and blessings be upon him).' And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is more virtuous and better than the Commander of the Believers; so when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had these words erased from his name, did his prophethood come to an end?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Two thousand men from that group came back, and all the rest were killed upon misguidance.

Abdullah bin Shaddad says: I came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). While we were sitting with her — on her return from Iraq, during the nights when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was being fought — she said to me: "O Abdullah bin Shaddad, will you tell me the truth about what I ask you? Tell me about these people whom Ali killed." I said: "Why would I not tell you the truth?" She said: "Then tell me their story." I said: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drew up a written agreement with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and appointed the two arbiters, eight thousand of the Qur'an reciters among the people rose against him and encamped at a place on the side of Kufah called Harura'. They objected to him and said: "You have stripped off a shirt that Allah clothed you with and a name He called you by, and then you went and appointed judges in the religion of Allah, whereas judgment belongs to Allah alone." When it reached Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) what they reproached him for and that they had separated from him, he ordered a caller to announce: "None shall come in to the Commander of the Believers except a man who carries the Qur'an." When the house was full of the Qur'an reciters, he called for a large copy of the Qur'an (mushaf), placed it in front of him, and began tapping it with his hand, saying: "O Mushaf, speak to the people." The people called out to him: "O Commander of the Believers, what are you asking it? It is only paper and ink; it is we who speak from what we have learned from it. What do you want?" He said: "Between me and these companions of yours who have gone out is the Book of Allah. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says concerning a woman and a man: 'And if you fear a breach between the two, then send an arbiter from his family' [Surah al-Nisa': 35]; and the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is greater in sanctity than a woman and a man. They also resented that I made a written agreement with Mu'awiyah and wrote 'Ali bin Abi Talib'. Yet Suhayl bin Amr came while we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hudaybiyah, when he made peace with his people, Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)' written. Suhayl said: 'Do not write Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.' I said: 'Then how shall I write?' He said: 'Write: Bismika Allahumma (In Your name, O Allah).' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Write it.' Then he said: 'Write: From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.' He (Suhayl) said: 'If we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not oppose you.' So he had it written: 'This is what Muhammad bin Abdullah has agreed with Quraysh.' And Allah says in His Book: 'Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example, for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day' [Surah al-Ahzab: 21]." Then Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) to them, and I went with him. When we reached the middle of their camp, Ibn al-Kawwa' stood up and addressed the people, saying: "O carriers of the Qur'an, this is Abdullah bin Abbas. Whoever does not know him, I know him from the Book of Allah: he is the one about whom and about whose people it was revealed: 'Rather, they are a quarrelsome people' [Surah al-Zukhruf: 58]. So send him back to his companion, and do not debate the Book of Allah with him." Then their orators stood up and said: "By Allah, we will certainly debate the Book of Allah with him. If he brings us truth that we recognise, we will follow it; and if he brings us falsehood, we will silence him with his falsehood and send him back to his companion." So they debated with him on the Book of Allah for three days, and four thousand of them came back, every one of them repentant, and Ibn al-Kawwa' brought them and led them in to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent word to the rest of them, saying: "You have seen what has happened in our affair and the affair of the people. Stay wherever you wish until the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) comes together, and camp wherever you wish. The agreement between us and you is that we will keep our spears from you as long as you do not cut off the roads or shed blood. If you do that, then we have openly declared war on you on equal terms; indeed, Allah does not love the treacherous." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Ibn Shaddad, so did he kill them?" He said: "By Allah, he did not send (troops) against them until they had cut off the roads, shed blood, killed Ibn Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) and deemed the people under protection (ahl al-dhimmah) fair game." She said: "By Allah?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it truly happened." She said: "Then what is this thing that has reached me from the people of Iraq, which they talk about, saying: 'Dhu al-Thadyi, Dhu al-Thadyi' (the one with the breast)?" I said: "I saw him; I stood over him with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) among the slain. He called the people and asked: 'Do you recognise this man?' How many came saying: 'I saw him praying in the mosque of Banu so-and-so,' 'I saw him praying in the mosque of Banu so-and-so'! Yet they brought no firm identification of him beyond that." She said: "What did Ali say when he stood over him, as the people of Iraq claim?" I said: "I heard him say: 'Sadaqa Allahu wa rasuluh' (Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth)." She said: "Did you hear him say anything other than that?" I said: "By Allah, no." She said: "Yes, Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. May Allah have mercy on Ali; it was his habit that whenever he saw something that pleased him, he would say: Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth."

This has passed before.
The hadith of al-Thudayyah is an authentic (sahih) hadith; we have mentioned it earlier. It is possible that Ibn Shaddad did not hear it while someone else did, and Allah knows best.

Yahya bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) says: My paternal uncle narrated to me: When we were drawn up for the Battle of the Camel, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let no one shoot an arrow, thrust with a spear or strike with a sword; you are not to start the fighting, and you are to speak to them gently. And I think he also said: Whoever succeeds today will succeed on the Day of Resurrection too. We remained like that until the day was well advanced, when they all called out together: O vengeance for the blood of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)! Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), who was in front of us and was carrying the banner, and asked: O Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, what are they calling out? He replied: They are calling for vengeance for the blood of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), O Commander of the Believers. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands and said: O Allah, today throw the killers of Uthman down on their faces.

Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) did not begin fighting at the Battle of the Camel until he had spent three days calling the people (to peace). When the third day came, Sayyiduna Hasan, Sayyiduna Husayn and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them) came to him and said: Our wounded are becoming many. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O nephew, I see it all. Bring me water. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution and prayed two rak'ahs. Then he raised his hands and supplicated to his Lord, and then said to them: If (Allah) gives you victory over these people, do not pursue anyone who turns his back to flee, do not finish off any wounded man, and take possession of whatever vessels were brought to the battle; whatever is besides that belongs to their heirs.
This is munqati' (broken); and what is correct is that he took nothing at all from them and did not strip any slain man.

Abu Bashir al-Shaybani (may Allah have mercy on him), in the story of the Battle of the Camel, says: They all gathered in Basrah. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Who will take the Mushaf (to them)? Then (he is to) say to them: What is wrong with you, that you are shedding our blood and your own? A man said: I will, O Commander of the Believers. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You will be killed. He said: It does not matter. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take the Mushaf. He went, and they killed him. In the same way Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent three men with the Mushaf, but they killed them. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Now fighting has become lawful. So there was fierce fighting, and then he related the rest of the hadith. Abu Bashir said: Then he returned to them whatever was in the camp, even the cooking pot.
