Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until two great groups fight each other. There will be a great slaughter between them, and their claim will be one."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) at his side; he (peace and blessings be upon him) would look at the people once and at Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) once, and he was saying: "This son of mine is a chief, and perhaps Allah Almighty will bring about reconciliation through him between two great groups of the Muslims."

Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If you were to look between Jabars and Jabalq (the east and the west), you would not find a man whose grandfather is a Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) other than me and my brother; and my view is that you should unite upon Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while." [Surah al-Anbiya: 111]

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) gave up the matter (of the caliphate) in favour of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Stand up and speak." So Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) praised and glorified Allah, then said: 'Amma ba'd' (To proceed): "The shrewdest shrewdness is piety, and the greatest incapacity is wickedness. Indeed, this matter in which Mu'awiyah and I differed is either the right of a man who was more entitled to it than me, or it is my right which I have left for Mu'awiyah, seeking the good of the Muslims and the sparing of their blood: 'And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while.' [Surah al-Anbiya: 111]" Then he sought forgiveness and came down.

Abu al-Bakhtari says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Were the people of the Camel polytheists? He said: They had fled from polytheism. It was asked: Were they hypocrites? He said: "They do not remember Allah except a little" [Surah al-Nisa: 142]; "The hypocrites remember Allah only a little." It was asked: Then who were they? He said: Our Muslim brothers who rebelled against us.

Rib'i bin Hirash says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I hope that I, Talhah and al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) are included in this saying of Allah: "And We will remove whatever rancour is in their breasts" [Surah al-A'raf: 43, Surah al-Hijr: 47].

Abu Habibah, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), says: I went in to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) together with Imran bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), after the Battle of the Camel. He said 'Marhaban' (Welcome) to us, seated him close to himself, and said: I hope that Allah will include me and your father in this verse: "And We will remove whatever rancour is in their breasts" [Surah al-A'raf: 43, Surah al-Hijr: 47]. Then he said: O my nephew, how is so-and-so? How is so-and-so? He asked him about the slave-mothers of his father's children. Then he said: We have held your land these years only for fear that people would plunder it. And he said: O so-and-so, go with him to Ibn Qarazah and tell him to give him the produce of these years and hand his land back to him. Two men were sitting to one side, one of whom was al-Harith al-A'war, and they said: Allah is more just than that; that we kill them and they are our brothers in Paradise? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Get up, both of you, to the farthest and most remote land of Allah! Who then would they be, if not Talhah and I? O my nephew, if you have any need, come to me.

Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to Kufah to gather the people: We know that Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this world and in the Hereafter, but Allah has tested you through her.

Khalid bin al-Washimah says: When the Battle of the Camel was over and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had settled in her lodging, I went in to her and said: 'As-salamu alayki' (Peace be upon you), O Mother of the Believers! She asked: Who is this? I said: Khalid bin al-Washimah. She asked: What became of Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: He was martyred. She said: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (Indeed we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return); may Allah have mercy on him. She asked: What happened to Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: He too was martyred. So she recited 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' and said: May Allah have mercy on him. I said: Rather, we say 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' over Zayd bin Suhan (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: Was Zayd struck down too? I said: Yes. So she recited 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' and said: May Allah have mercy on him. I said: O Mother of the Believers, I mentioned Talhah and you said, 'May Allah have mercy on him'; I mentioned Zubayr and you said, 'May Allah have mercy on him'; and I mentioned Zayd and you said, 'May Allah have mercy on him' — yet they killed one another. By Allah, Allah will never gather them together in one Paradise. She said: Do you not know that the mercy of Allah is vast and that He has power over all things? He said: So she was better than me.

Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Amr bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him), who was among the most eminent companions of Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him), saw in a dream (and said): I entered Paradise and saw great domes there. I asked: For whom are these? I was told: These are for Dhu al-Kala' and Hawshab. These two were among those who were killed alongside Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: What became of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions? He said: They are ahead of you. I said: 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah)! They killed one another — and yet (they are) together? The reply came: They found Allah's forgiveness vast. I said: What happened to the people of al-Nahr? He said: They met with hardship. Yahya bin Abi Talib says: I heard Yazid in a gathering — he was in Baghdad, and there were seventy thousand people in the gathering — and he said: Do not let this hadith deceive you, for Dhu al-Kala' and Hawshab freed twelve thousand (12000) households; and he mentioned other merits of theirs as well.

Shaqiq bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man said: Who is there that recognises the rebels, on the day the polytheists — that is, the people of al-Nahr — were killed? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They were far from shirk (polytheism). He said: Then were they hypocrites? He said: The hypocrites remember Allah only a little. He then asked: So who were they? He said: A rebellious people over whom we were granted victory.
