Alqamah bin Waqqas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a jesting man used to go to the rulers to make them laugh. My grandfather said to him: Woe to you, O so-and-so! Why do you go to these (rulers) to make them laugh? For I heard Bilal bin al-Harith al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A servant speaks a word that pleases Allah, not thinking that it will reach the extent it reaches, and because of it Allah will be pleased with him until the Day he meets Him; and a servant speaks a word that angers Allah, not thinking that it will reach the extent it reaches, and because of it Allah will be angry with him until the Day he meets Him."

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were seven or nine men, and between us were cushions made of red leather. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me there will be rulers; whoever affirms their lies and helps them in their oppression is not of me and I am not of him, and he will not come to me at the Pool. And whoever does not affirm their lies and does not help them in their oppression is of me and I am of him, and he will meet me at the Pool of Kawthar."

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "How will you be when you remain among the dregs of people whose trusts and covenants have become corrupted, and they have become like this?" Then he interlaced his fingers. They asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what should we do at that time? He said: "Take what you recognise as good and leave what you find objectionable." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked him privately: What do you command me to do at that time? He said: "I advise you to fear Allah, to keep control of your own self, and to keep yourself away from the affairs of the public."

Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: O Abu Abdur-Rahman, we sit with these rulers of ours and they speak words while we know that the truth is other than it, yet we affirm them; we strengthen them and praise them, and they pass unjust judgements. What is your view about this? He said: O my nephew, in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to consider this hypocrisy; I do not know what you consider it.
