Hisham said: Whoever rejects (them) with his tongue is free (of blame), and whoever dislikes (them) in his heart remains safe; but (as for) whoever is pleased and follows them." It was asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Should we not fight them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, as long as they keep praying."

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The best of your leaders are those whom you love and who love you, who pray for you and for whom you pray; and the worst of your leaders are those whom you hate and who hate you, whom you curse and who curse you." We said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Should we not rise against them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, as long as they keep praying. But as for the ruler who does something of disobedience to Allah, then dislike that thing, and do not withdraw your hand from obedience to him."

Sayyiduna al-Miqdam (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Obey your rulers. If they command you with what I have told you, they will be rewarded for it and you will be rewarded for your obedience; and if they command you with something other than what I have told you, its burden is upon them and you are free of it. That is because when you meet Allah, you will say: 'Our Lord, there is no injustice,' and Allah will say: 'There is no injustice.' Then you will say: 'Our Lord! You sent Messengers to us and we obeyed them; then (You appointed) caliphs and by Your command we obeyed them too; then (You appointed) rulers and by Your command alone we obeyed them too.' Allah will say: 'You have spoken the truth; its burden is upon them, and you are free of it.'"
