Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man from Banu Mudlij named Qatadah threw a sword at his son; it struck him, he was wounded, and he died. Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the story. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Prepare 120 camels and wait for me. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, took from those camels 30 hiqqah, 30 jadha'ah and 40 khalifah camels, and said: Where is the brother of the slain man? He said: Here I am. He said: Take these, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is nothing for the killer."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I have heard from many scholars that a father is not to be killed for his son, and this is what I also hold.
Al-Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This narration is munqati' (broken); Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) reinforced it by noting that many scholars hold this view, and it has also been narrated with a connected (mawsul) chain.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man of Banu Mudlij was given a slave girl, and he had a son by her. He used to make her serve him. When the boy grew up, the man called her one day and said: Do such and such. The boy said: She will not come to you; how long will you treat my mother as a slave girl? The man became angry and threw his sword at him; it struck his leg, the boy bled, and he died. He went with a group of his people to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O enemy of yourself! You are the one who killed your son. Had I not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, 'A father is not subjected to retaliation for his son,' I would have killed you. Bring his blood money." So he brought 120 or 130 camels. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) selected 100 of them and gave them to his (the son's) heirs, and left the father out.
