Bayhaqi 15963 — A man who kills his son

Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man from Banu Mudlij named Qatadah threw a sword at his son; it struck him, he was wounded, and he died. Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the story. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Prepare 120 camels and wait for me. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, took from those camels 30 hiqqah, 30 jadha'ah and 40 khalifah camels, and said: Where is the brother of the slain man? He said: Here I am. He said: Take these, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is nothing for the killer."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I have heard from many scholars that a father is not to be killed for his son, and this is what I also hold.
Al-Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This narration is munqati' (broken); Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) reinforced it by noting that many scholars hold this view, and it has also been narrated with a connected (mawsul) chain.
